On September 10, 1813 U.S. Navy Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry took advantage of a wind shift on Lake Erie to defeat a British squadron led by Commander Robert Heriot Barclay in the Battle of Put-in-Bay.
Nearly two hundred years later, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are looking forward to another potential Lake Erie battle – this time for a chance to be crowned 2013 Bassmaster Angler of the Year.
Michigan's Bassmaster Classic history
By Jeff Nedwick on Apr 5, 2013 | In BASS, Bassmaster Classic, Pro Anglers, Ryan Said, JVD, KVD, Chad Pipkens
Since its debut in 1971, Michigan anglers have qualified for the Bassmaster Classic thirty six times and only six times in the last 32 years has the state failed to produce a qualifier. In fact, only 14 states have produced more Bassmaster Classic qualifiers than Michigan.
However, before engaging in any inter-state trash talking, know that these statistics are significantly skewed by the fact that 23 of those 36 Classic appearances are attributed to one angler - Kevin VanDam. Exclude VanDam's numbers and Michigan's representation is a more pedestrian 13 appearances by 10 anglers over the 42 year history of the Classic.

DETROIT, Mich. – The weather changed for all of the competitors at the Northern Open on Lake St. Clair today, but the sun continued to shine the brightest on local angler Brian Metry. Many pros complained that the emerging sun and fierce winds didn’t have their expected effect, but Metry added 22 pounds to his 23-05 catch from Day 1 and has a 14-ounce lead over Oklahoman Jason Christie.
