UPDATE 5/31/2026: At least 6 Michigan State Representatives have removed their sponsorship from HB 5801 and 5802. Your actions are having an impact! Thank you! There was discussion at the May 20 House Committee, but the bills remain in committee.

The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes Extreme Low Water

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Ultimate Fishing Show Detroit 2027 / Ultimate Sport Show Tour 2027

It's almost that time again! The 2027 Ultimate Sport Show Tour will be here before you know it! It looks like the Ultimate Fishing Show Detroit will be bigger than ever! The Show runs January 7 - 10, 2027.

Right now I believe I will be there in Booth 3011.

A change this year - there is no Outdoorama. That show has been canceled.

But still the other huge show - Ultimate Sport Show Grand Rapids March 18 - 21, 2027. I will be there too though I don't know my booth number yet.

It you want to help out in the booth at either show, just please message me on here. Thanks!

Ultimate Fishing Show Detroit 2027 / No Outdoorama in 2027

Found out recently that Outdoorama will no longer occur. The show has been removed from the schedule. Showspan did add 2 new shows - The Ultimate Hunting Show in Novi and the The Ultimate Fishing Show Pittsburgh I believe it is. If you are in Pennsylvania this will probably be a great show for you! If you also hunt, make sure you watch for news on The Ultimate Hunting Show.

I will continue to have a booth at the January 2027 Ultimate Fishing Show in Novi (Detroit) and the March 2027 Ultimate Sport Show Grand Rapids.

I thought you guys might enjoy an underwater view of the smallmouth bass on Lake Charlevoix I took this week.  The water temperature is running 46 to 47 degrees.  When they aren't biting it's always curious to see what they are doing.  This is in a typical pre spawn area before they move up to spawn.

Check out my article: https://www.greatlakesbass.com/news/conservation/michigan-commercial-fishing-attack-on-sport-fishing/ for information on Michigan House Bills 5801 and 5802 that are commercial fishing's attempt to add our gamefish that they do not pay for to their profits. They want walleye and perch. Sport Fishing dollars pay for managing and stocking those fish. Not commercial fishing. They want to use multiple nets, including gill nets that will kill other fish including probably smallmouth bass. The Michigan Sport Fishing industry is a $4 BILLION natural resources economy driver, while commercial fishing in a few million. They should not be able to start selling gamefish at our cost. Read the article. Contact your State Representative ASAP and tell him or her that you oppose these bills and want her or him to also.

I'll be there back by The Hawg Trough in aisle 1900 in booth 1929 next to Xtreme Bass Tackle (Booth 1926) where you can sign up for Saturday's 2-hour Ultimate Bass Clinic (3pm-5pm, Stage D) for $25. You get a lure pack for attending.
