The weather changed for all of the competitors at the Northern Open on Lake St. Clair today, but the sun continued to shine the brightest on local angler Brian Metry. Many pros complained that the emerging sun and fierce winds did not have their expected effect, but Metry added 22 pounds to his 23-05 catch from Day 1 and has a 14-ounce lead over Oklahoman Jason Christie.

B.A.S.S. tournament officials and Nate Wellman have mutually agreed that Mr. Wellman will not fish any Bassmaster tournaments until March 2012. Mr. Wellman will not compete in the Bassmaster Northern Open this week in Syracuse, N.Y., and as a consequence of his withdrawal, Mr. Wellman will be ineligible to compete in the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.

The Professional Anglers Association has declared Michigan professional angler Nate Wellman ineligible to compete in any of its events for a year. Wellman was fined $2,500 and put on probation for one year by B.A.S.S. following an investigation into a complaint by his final day co-angler at the recent Bass Pro Shops Northern Open on Lake Erie. Wellman won the tournament. His co-angler reported to tournament officials that Wellman made repeated statements that, according to B.A.S.S., "were suggestive of a rules violation."

Six of those 13 qualifiers will come from the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens (two from each division: Northern, Southern and Central). Another six will come from the BASS Federation Nation Championship in late October
