There's nothing like a little Great Lakes smallmouth bass fishing to bring out the best in Michigan's Bassmaster Elite Series pros. Michigan's Elite pros are hoping their St. Lawrence River success carries over into next week's Plano Championship Chase on Lake St. Clair.

On September 10, 1813 U.S. Navy Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry took advantage of a wind shift on Lake Erie to defeat a British squadron in the Battle of Put-in-Bay. Nearly two hundred years later, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are looking forward to another potential Lake Erie battle for a chance to be crowned 2013 Angler of the Year.

It might surprise some to learn that only 14 states have produced more Bassmaster Classic qualifiers than Michigan. Thirty six have come from Michigan since the Classic debuted in 1971 and only six times in the last 32 years has it failed to produce a qualifier.

The weather changed for all of the competitors at the Northern Open on Lake St. Clair today, but the sun continued to shine the brightest on local angler Brian Metry. Many pros complained that the emerging sun and fierce winds did not have their expected effect, but Metry added 22 pounds to his 23-05 catch from Day 1 and has a 14-ounce lead over Oklahoman Jason Christie.

Four days on Lake Michigan produced four different tournament leaders at the Bassmaster Elite Series Green Bay Challenge. But it was the leader at the end of today's final competition round who takes home the trophy, $100,000 in first-place prize money and an automatic berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic. That distinction belongs to Jonathon VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan with a four-day catch of smallmouth bass weighing 79 pounds, 2 ounces.

Rookie Jonathon VanDam, who made the final-day cut in his first Bassmaster Elite Series event, says he isn't rattled by the fact that his famous uncle is two places ahead of him on the leaderboard.

Shaw Grigsby, you still have it. The veteran pro from Gainesville, Fla., outfished the 99-man Bassmaster Elite Series field in a nerve-jangling contest over four days that hinged on an on-again, off-again sight bite on the Harris Chain of Lakes.
