I had the distinct pleasure of riding along with one of the best professional bass anglers in the world Wednesday, the last official practice day for the 2014 Bassmaster Classic. Of course, we were on Lake Guntersville, Alabama and I was with Aaron Martens.

It might surprise some to learn that only 14 states have produced more Bassmaster Classic qualifiers than Michigan. Thirty six have come from Michigan since the Classic debuted in 1971 and only six times in the last 32 years has it failed to produce a qualifier.

Only three states sent more pros to the 2013 Bassmaster Classic than Michigan. But despite the state's strong representation - three qualifiers, including four time winner Kevin VanDam - Michigan pros were unable to match the consistency of Mississippi's lone representative, Cliff Pace.

B.A.S.S. LLC announced today that a new combination of sites Birmingham, Alabama and Lake Guntersville has been selected for the 2014 Bassmaster Classic, the world championship of bass fishing.

The 2013 Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma's Grand Lake o' the Cherokees, Feb. 22-24, will feature 53 of the best bass anglers in the world. Fifty-two of them have been identified. One is yet to be determined from the Bassmaster Weekend Series.

"I'll know when I get there." That's what several Bassmaster Classic qualifiers had to say about Red River conditions and how the weather might or might not dictate the bite for the Feb. 24-26 Bassmaster Classic out of Shreveport-Bossier City, La. None of the 49 Classic qualifiers have been on the river lately, because it's been off limits for more than two months.

B.A.S.S. tournament officials and Nate Wellman have mutually agreed that Mr. Wellman will not fish any Bassmaster tournaments until March 2012. Mr. Wellman will not compete in the Bassmaster Northern Open this week in Syracuse, N.Y., and as a consequence of his withdrawal, Mr. Wellman will be ineligible to compete in the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.
