BENTON, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2011) – The Professional Anglers Association has declared Michigan professional angler Nate Wellman ineligible to compete in any of its events for a year.
Wellman was fined $2,500 and put on probation for one year by B.A.S.S. following an investigation into a complaint by his final day co-angler at the recent Bass Pro Shops Northern Open on Lake Erie. Wellman won the tournament. His co-angler reported to tournament officials that Wellman made repeated statements that, according to B.A.S.S., “were suggestive of a rules violation.”

Todd Schmitz of Goshen, Ind., had the deck stacked against him on the final day of the 2010 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on the Detroit River. He started Saturday in ninth place and more than five pounds behind leader Chris King, who had smacked 25-plus pounds Friday.
But King of South Amherst, Ohio, faltered Saturday and didn’t weigh in a single fish. The honey hole he relied on for the two previous days dried up and King wound up in 20th place, which opened the door for Schmitz. Schmitz boated 23-13, the second heaviest bag of the tournament and the heaviest of the final day, to build his three-day total to 61-0. With the victory, Schmitz will take home more than $46,000 and valuable points in the Bassmaster Northern Open circuit.

Ohio’s King in Position to Take the Crown at Bassmaster Northern Open on Detroit River
By djkimmel on Aug 20, 2010 | In Bass Tournaments, BASS Opens, BASS, Northern
Changing weather threw most anglers a curve Friday, but it was the locals who came on strong with the 180-degree wind shift. Taking full advantage was Chris King of South Amherst, Ohio, who boated 25-14 worth of Detroit River smallmouth at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open to take the lead heading into the final day. King’s limit was the heaviest of the tournament and he accumulated it by repeating Thursday’s milk run of old, proven fishing spots.
