The Bassmaster Elite Series Plano Championship Chase was billed as Lake St. Clair's chance to show the world why it was named the best bass fishing lake in the U.S. But Lake Erie and Lake Huron didn't follow the script, stealing the limelight from Lake St. Clair and putting the "great" in Great Lakes bass fishing.
A lot was at stake in the final Elite tournament of the year but most of the drama ended before the tournament did. The 2013 Angler of the Year (AOY), 2013 Rookie of the Year (ROY), Toyota All-Star Week tournament bids and 2014 Bassmaster Classic bids were mostly decided by the end of the third day leaving only the outcome of the tournament itself in question going into the final day.

There's nothing like a little Great Lakes smallmouth bass fishing to bring out the best in Michigan's Bassmaster Elite Series pros.

On September 10, 1813 U.S. Navy Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry took advantage of a wind shift on Lake Erie to defeat a British squadron led by Commander Robert Heriot Barclay in the Battle of Put-in-Bay.
Nearly two hundred years later, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are looking forward to another potential Lake Erie battle – this time for a chance to be crowned 2013 Bassmaster Angler of the Year.
Michigan's Bassmaster Classic history

Since its debut in 1971, Michigan anglers have qualified for the Bassmaster Classic thirty six times and only six times in the last 32 years has the state failed to produce a qualifier. In fact, only 14 states have produced more Bassmaster Classic qualifiers than Michigan.
However, before engaging in any inter-state trash talking, know that these statistics are significantly skewed by the fact that 23 of those 36 Classic appearances are attributed to one angler - Kevin VanDam. Exclude VanDam's numbers and Michigan's representation is a more pedestrian 13 appearances by 10 anglers over the 42 year history of the Classic.

Only three states sent more pros to the 2013 Bassmaster Classic than Michigan. But despite the state’s strong representation - three qualifiers, including four time winner Kevin VanDam - Michigan pros were unable to match the consistency of Mississippi’s lone representative, Cliff Pace.
