On September 10, 1813 U.S. Navy Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry took advantage of a wind shift on Lake Erie to defeat a British squadron in the Battle of Put-in-Bay. Nearly two hundred years later, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are looking forward to another potential Lake Erie battle for a chance to be crowned 2013 Angler of the Year.

B.A.S.S. tournament officials and Nate Wellman have mutually agreed that Mr. Wellman will not fish any Bassmaster tournaments until March 2012. Mr. Wellman will not compete in the Bassmaster Northern Open this week in Syracuse, N.Y., and as a consequence of his withdrawal, Mr. Wellman will be ineligible to compete in the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.

The Professional Anglers Association has declared Michigan professional angler Nate Wellman ineligible to compete in any of its events for a year. Wellman was fined $2,500 and put on probation for one year by B.A.S.S. following an investigation into a complaint by his final day co-angler at the recent Bass Pro Shops Northern Open on Lake Erie. Wellman won the tournament. His co-angler reported to tournament officials that Wellman made repeated statements that, according to B.A.S.S., "were suggestive of a rules violation."

Nate Wellman has had a dream since he was 12 years old: to fish in the Bassmaster Classic. Since then, he has strived to make that dream a reality by trying to qualify through the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens as well as the Bassmaster Elite Series. But before today, he's always come up short. With his win on Lake Erie, he'll be able to live out that dream next February on Louisiana's Red River at the 2012 Classic.

Weights soared on Day Two of the second 2011 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open as the winds calmed down and gave anglers access to more of Lake Erie. 15 anglers crossed the 20 pound mark, with John Devries tallying an astounding 26-7 worth of smallmouth. However, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Nate Wellman managed to retain his lead with a catch of 23-3, giving him a two-day total of 45-7.

Lake Erie's highly mobile smallmouth bass had much of the field scrambling for bites on Day One of the second 2011 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open, but several pros were able to adapt and crack the 20-pound mark. No one was more surprised at leader Nate Wellman's Day One weight than Wellman himself.

Steve Kennedy had been counting down the months ever since the 2011 Pride of Georgia location was announced as West Point Lake more than a year ago. "I was very confident I had a chance to win this tournament. I knew exactly what I was going to do, and it worked," he said after coming from behind Sunday to win the fifth stop of the 2011 Bassmaster Elite Series.

A shad bite, a common fishing pattern, can take on many variations. One twist is the spawning shad bite, important this week for several of the Bassmaster Elite Series anglers competing on West Point Lake in the Pride of Georgia. David Walker found spawning shad Thursday morning, then continued to key in on shad throughout the first competition day.
