The Bassmaster Elite Series Plano Championship Chase was billed as Lake St. Clair's chance to show the world why it was named the best bass fishing lake in the U.S. But Lake Erie and Lake Huron didn't follow the script, stealing the limelight from Lake St. Clair and putting the great in Great Lakes bass fishing.

There's nothing like a little Great Lakes smallmouth bass fishing to bring out the best in Michigan's Bassmaster Elite Series pros. Michigan's Elite pros are hoping their St. Lawrence River success carries over into next week's Plano Championship Chase on Lake St. Clair.

On September 10, 1813 U.S. Navy Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry took advantage of a wind shift on Lake Erie to defeat a British squadron in the Battle of Put-in-Bay. Nearly two hundred years later, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are looking forward to another potential Lake Erie battle for a chance to be crowned 2013 Angler of the Year.

It might surprise some to learn that only 14 states have produced more Bassmaster Classic qualifiers than Michigan. Thirty six have come from Michigan since the Classic debuted in 1971 and only six times in the last 32 years has it failed to produce a qualifier.

The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to the Grand River at Grand Haven July 30 for the third of five stops in the Michigan Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

Diet Mountain Dew pro Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., caught a five-bass limit weighing 20 pounds, 4 ounces Friday to extend his lead on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Hartwell presented by Chevy. His two-day catch of 10 bass weighing 42 pounds, 8 ounces gives him a massive 9-pound, 1-ounce lead heading into the third day of the tournament. There were 155 pros and 155 co-anglers from across the United States and Canada that started the tournament.
