Effective May 24, 2013, under a new Indiana Department of Natural Resources rule, an umbrella rig, like the Alabama Rig, can now have up to three hooks and unlimited hookless attractors. When artificial lures are used on an umbrella rig or similar device they are considered one hook even if the lure has multiple hooks.

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources provided GreatLakesBass.com with a clarification on their regulations specifically pertaining to the use of Alabama castable umbrella rigs stating you can legally fish with up to 4 hooks on the rig. You can leave the 5th wire empty or use a spinner or minnow body with no hook if you choose.

Minnesota DNR has been fielding questions from anglers wondering if the Alabama Fishing Rig (also know as a Yumbrella rig) is legal to use in this state. The answer? Not the configuration as it is commonly promoted and sold. However, a rig would be legal if not more than one hook or artificial lure/bait is attached. An angler then could place hookless spinners or plastic baits to the other wires if desired.

A new fishing lure may be catching more anglers than fish and is generating quite a buzz on message boards and sports shows across Iowa. The Alabama Rig, as it is called, is an umbrella-type rig and consists of a weighted head with five wire leaders trailing behind. Each wire leader can be used to attach lures which when pulled through the water will simulate a school of baitfish.

The new Alabama rig is sweeping the nation, raising questions by anglers regarding its legality. The Illinois DNR legal staff, working with the Divisions of Fisheries and Law Enforcement, have determined that the Alabama rig IS legal in those waters in the state that do NOT have the 2 poles only with no more than 2 hooks or lures per pole regulation.

GreatLakesBass.com has confirmed with Lansing Michigan DNR Fisheries and Law Enforcement Divisions that castable umbrella rigs like The Alabama Rig are legal in Michigan using up to 6 hooks. We talked to Fisheries personnel in the chief's office and then verified with Sergeant Wood in the Law Enforcement Division in Lansing to confirm this information for you.

Indiana DNR director Robert E. Carter Jr. has signed a temporary rule that establishes a limit on the number of hooks allowed on a rig or lure array used for sport fishing, essentially making so-called umbrella rigs like the Alabama Rig legal through the remainder of 2012.
