Another Great Lakes Bass fishing adventure
By djkimmel on Aug 11, 2011 | In Fish Stories | Send feedback »
Poor cameraguy hadn't been out in a boat all year so I figured I better get him out fishing. We traveled just a few miles from my house to Lansing's upper pool of the Grand River. This was the morning of August 4th, a Thursday. It wasn't supposed to rain but we had sprinkles trying to dampen our spirits.
Epidemic of Trolling Motor Attacks by Large Musky

Somewhat tongue in cheek, but Lake St. Clair bass tournament weight record holder Scott Dobson isn't laughing after not one, but two large Lake St. Clair muskies attacked his brand new Minn Kota trolling motor head two days in a row while he was out enjoying some late fall smallmouth bass fishing! In all my years fishing out there, I've had one big one do this once, but two days in a row!?! That is something. Check out the pictures of the damage on the forum.
Fishing with a Legend

What would you say to a chance to fish Lake St. Clair with someone who has over 80 years of fishing experience on the lake? How about if the angler inviting you along is an international legend and member of the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame? I said yes, of course, when Bob Brunner, the legendary guide of Lake St. Clair said, Dan, lets go fishing.

...but it's time to go home (and back to work...)! Isn't that how it always?
I never finished my story about the 2008 fall big bass hunt - shorter in duration this year, but no less important to my well-being. After a total error of a day on Saturday, Sunday could easily go better. It definitely started out well when I saw that hoards of bass were coming into the shallows. They were not doing much other than just sitting there, but at least you could now tell there's a lot of bass in the lake unlike the previous days.
This isn't that uncommon in the fall. Sometimes they crash the shore hard on a warming trend, but the past couple of seasons it's been more of a 'sashay' into the shallows. I was heartened when I got slammed by this very nice 5 lbs 1 oz smallie still fairly early in the day. Caught the beauty on a dark melon tinsel Xtreme Bass Tackle tube in about 10 feet of water.
I decided to wait until later in the afternoon because I've danced with this partner before... bass swimming into the shallows in groups and just sitting in 4 to 7 feet of water over sand looking like a big ole aquarium! You can drive yourself crazy in the spring and fall sometimes trying to catch these bass.
The best laid plans...

My 3rd day up north on my annual fall big bass hunt did not go quite as planned...
After the very slow start on Mullett with no definite move to the shallows despite warm sun, I decided to try something different. Forgot to mention yesterday that I ended up trading cameraguy as a room mate for 2 roomies - genie and Brett decided it was too late to drive home to the GR area after trying all day to sample the 'awesome' fishing someone may or may not have led them to believe they could enjoy.
We all konked out fairly early, but they did not bother to wake me real early Saturday morning. Which was nice
Mullett Lake a No Show?

Well... I said the bass were biting, but unfortunately for many anglers up here right now, not many of them! After a slow start in our short evening Thursday albeit somewhat successful with cameraguy's biggest smallie ever at 6.5 pounds, we looked forward to a sunny day with warming water. Normally a good thing this time of year.
The Winds Blows but not the fishing!

Back up north for my annual fall big northern smallmouth lake trip to possibly my favorite lake in the world (at least north of Gaylord and south of St. Ignace) Mullett Lake. Drove most of midday to get here on this shorter trip this year so we only had a few hours this afternoon to test the waters. And the wind is howling. Not the 45 mhp mess we always seem to get part of our week long trips, but it is definitely blowing 30 or better!
Not a whole lot of the lake is fishable (unless you like getting really wet while going up and down a lot!!). Luckily, we only have a few hours anyway. So we launch in the NW and the waves are still wrapping around Dodge Pt. It's shallower so on every swell as I wait for cameraguy to park the trailer, my motor is bottoming out on the sandy bottom!
As we're getting ready to head out, we run into Ryan and his dad. Then bender calls because he and Langer just got up too and they're looking for a place to fish without getting slammed by the wind.
