Slow but peaceful morning on Lake Ovid 7-27-2016

Bret Holling invited me from Facebook for a morning on fishing on Lake Ovid on Wednesday, 7/27/2016. I like Lake Ovid and fishing with new people a number of times a year. Plus, it's fishing which is always good, right so I said, "sure, of course! Let's do this!"

Got there at 7am to a warm, mostly sunny, perfect summer day with only a light breeze. We both started on a mid-lake weedline with topwater baits. I had my big size 130 Whopper Plopper while Bret had a popping frog.


Bret struck first. Or a bass did anyway striking his popping frog right along the edge of the weeds. It was a short bass but what a chunk!! Every bass in Lake Ovid seems to be not missing any meals for sure!

We fished some other weed edges for a while without getting any good bites. Things were a lot slower than either of us expected or hoped for. We struck out completely on a couple spots including one that produced 5 or 6 bass for Derek and me on our last trip there.

Finally, we found a weed edge that had some bass on it but we also were missing some of them!?! They would eat it good and we'd set the hook like Bassmaster only to have the fish swim off. I even saw one bass that I pulled up out of the weeds only to have it swim one way and my Bullet Craw go the other way!


But this bass hit hard on the drop in a hole in the weeds and I got it! Not huge but a solid chunk with a small sore on its side though it fought good and seemed to be eating good, and otherwise healthy.


We got in a little school of them then and Bret got a solid keeper too after losing one that double over his rod on his Bassmaster hook set!

We were both pretty much resigned to pitching creature baits though we tried crankbaits and a few other lures just to try to keep them honest. We caught a couple more keepers on the creature baits (mine on the old Bullet Craw as usual). And that was about it for our 4 hours of fishing.

It was fun even though it was a little slow. We had some more bites that we should have hooked up so we could have had 7 or 8 keepers probably. We saw a bunch of deer walking along the shoreline in a few places and a bald eagle flew over us while we were fishing.

Lake Ovid is always a little piece of nice nature to spend a few hours on and this morning was no different. I want to thank Bret for taking me fishing for a few hours on one of my favorite lakes. We talked about all kinds of things and had a good morning. Looking forward to repeating it at some time.
