Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

The lure of big smallies has this west sider hooked.  I am thinking about going over Sunday morning, and dragging a couple of buddies with me.  Is it worth it now, or is it a big waste of time?  Has it cleared up?  Have the fish spawned?  Any info would be awesome.  Thanks.

Bad weekend for me, or I'd go with you.

I was out ther last Sat and Sunday, they were on fire. Most were in the 4 lb range, couple smaller ones. Biggest one I caught went over 20 inch and about 5.5 lbs....Muskamoot Bay is where I was fishing, tubes, spinnerbaits, and he occasional trap; they were all over and the water was clear.

With all this nice weather I am sure the water has only gotten better.

I went out today and putzed around the mile rds.  I did well for fishing from 0700 to noon.  I caught about 30 or so.  Most kept.  Biggest was 5lbs +.  Best five would go 18lbs plus.  Water clearing up.  Still stained but the fish are moving.

It's definitely worth the trip, it can be time well spent!

Like BD, I was out yesterday and had lots of fun.  I worked from Windmill Point all the way up to Memorial Park (the big white tent around that can be seen for miles for those not familiar).  Took a ton of rods but all I needed was a crankbait and a fluke.  There are fish moving to bed but you can also run across a pack of angry wolves!  Wolf packs are lots of fun! ;D  I chased one around 11 mile and pulled 7 fish in about 45 mins and then I lost them.  Apparently they went left and I went right... ???

Apparently after a late phone call from my mid-state (Grand Ledge) brother, we will be on LSC tomorrow!  We (me, the Ms, and my bro) will be hunting the wolf packs out of a white Chapion with green pins, Optimax on back.

Mike, if you wanna meet up or talk on the H2O I'll pm my ph after this is posted.

Hey if I can ask.  How were you fishing the flukes???  And were they flukes or super flukes??  Thanks.

Mike S.

Well, unfortunately for me, work really screwed up my trip.  Not going to happen this weekend.  Guess I'll have to settle for making a lot of money instead.  Good luck to all who are out.  Wish I could be there.

First, they were UV-Tackle flukes (4" pearl).  I like them a lot with bedding bass, they can p/o a fish in a heartbeat.

I was cruising throwing a crank first and foremost, then if I passed a bass situated I would "run" to the back of the boat with the fluke and work that fish during my "drift".  There were enough fish that I didn't worry about circling back or pounding one bed, they get that enough.

I understand the work thing, but it really, really, really woulda been worth the trip! ;D  It was like a nursery rhyme out there: "Here a fish, there a fish, everywhere a fish, fish!"

As I am on vacation from work all week and the pool is open and the "honey do's" are at a minimum for now, I am heading out to LSC tomorrow for another fishing adventure.  There should be a lot less traffic out there as the holiday weekend is over.  I am probably going to spend two or three other days out there fishing.  Can't wait..... 8)

Thanks for the info Rat  I don't get up there a lot, but will put it in my memory bank.  My brother told  me to try bubble gum colored flukes.  Did you just work em over the beds or let them drop in??  I fished in Maine for smallies on beds and used a regular pearl colored fluke and let it agonizingly drop into the beds.  Worked pretty good.
