Going to do something I don't normally do. In fact never done it. I'm going to drive all the way over to the Detroit River and do some walleye fishing. Going to go with a buddy who has fished over there a little, but if anyone has any ideas we'll take em. Just driving over for the day.

If you check another forum:   Walleye Central you can get fishing reports from guys that just fish for Walleye.

They usually post when, where, and how.  I've found them to be fairly reliable.

The last I looked the water was still cold, and the "run" hadn't started up heavy yet.

If you launch out of Elizabeth Park, you can go down river from there and fish w/ the other 100 boats.  Most of them will be vertical jigging along the break line.

Be prepared to lose a lot of jigs if you go here.  There's a lot stuff to snagg on in that area.

Keep your line vertical as you jig.

So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

I went out on Saturday and jigged the lower river in front of humbug marina. We managed to catch 2 walleye in the first half hour we were there and then nothing to show for the next 6 hours. The water temp there was 43. We went all the way up river by the steel mills and the water temp there was 45. There were a bunch of boats in the Trenton channel, probably around 400. There was an flw walleye league event going on. They had 70 boats in the tournament. The winner had 5 fish for 25 lbs 2nd place had 5 fish for 14 pounds. There were 40 boats that weighed in a fish and 30 zero's. The fishing should be getting better daily with the rain and warm weather conditions. I would say it will be another week before good numbers of fish will be in the river. This week the FLW pro walleye tour is in town and that tournament should yield some big weights. You can keep up on it by visiting FLWOUTDOORS.COM
I will be fishing there a couple of times this week and on the weekends you can pm me for updates.

Thanks guys for the info. Been watching the weather and instead of driving over Tuesday it looks like Thursday will be a better weather day. Have to play it by ear. Thanks again.

My dad and I jigged the river on sunday in a not so known hot spot and ended up with our 10 fish limit in 6 hours of work. They were all males just over the 15" size limit. No huge fish caught or seen caught in that stretch of river and my guess is the big females are just starting to hit the lower river. If any of you want to catch a walleye over 10 now is the right time to be in the trenton channel. In the comming weekend they showed be moving up river to the popular spawning grounds. Mudd island, Steel mills etc.

I was out on Saturday after work for an hour and a half near Mud Island and caught a nice 4 lber... and lost another...

Sunday was absolutley nuts with so many boats out there... lost one for 3 hours of work... Tuesday I'll be out all day probably and hopefully come out with my limit...

Jiggin for walleye and catching them really gives me a reminder of why I like bass fishing so much more...

Walleye fishing was hot this past weekend. Made 3 trips and got 3 limits. I did meet up with a friend of one of our board members all the way from the west side and hopefully i put him on some fish. Now is the time to fill the freezer with those tasty walleyes because we all know that eating bass would be just like eating our children.  :o
The fish are being caught all througout the river and it is only going to get better. So, if you have the fishing bug and dont want to target a not in season species head down to the detroit river and catchem.

I'll be heading down to the river on Wednesday w/ my Dad.  He's 80 and I like to keep him moving doing stuff.

I took him once before, but we were skunked.  I'm rigged w/ Fireline for sensitivity, two trolling motors to keep her vertical.

Any other suggestions?

Use mono or flourocarbon... or use a leader on your Fireline... i'm thoroughly convinced that Fireline will not get you as many bites as mono or flourocarbon...

The other day I was out with 2 friends... myself and my friend Ant, had Flourocarbon and my friend Mat had Fireline... Ant and I proceeded to whack'em pretty good and Mat was getting really frustrated... he put a mono leader on his rig and on his first drop caught the biggest fish of the day as well as a few more...

Last time I was out we had to use stingers also...

Hey Fishon,
You were a big hit with my walleye friend. He was impressed! Said that you were a great guy. Any time I can reciprocate let me know. I have a cabin on the northwest side here and  within an hour of several pretty good lakes. Some good smallies get caught on this side of the state as well. Catch some pretty good walleyes too through the ice. May have to go with the friend you saw and learn how to catch dinner on soft water. Thanks again he was really appreciative and called me twice to say how gracious and helpful you were.  PM me and we'll go fishing.
