The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Dropped the wife off in Houghton lake for a show and headed to the lake.  Having never even seen the lake before my first impression was.  It is pretty big.  Since I had no idea where to go I ended up fishing the canals on the south east end of the lake.  There was a breeze out of the south and white caps were just forming.  To get there you have to go out and around a huge sand point.  My GPS chip had it marked pretty well.  Took out 1 jig rod.  The canals are a mix of nice homes with sea walls and vacant lots with overgrown bushes in the water.  Wide enough to fish down one side and back up the other.   Second cast I catch a 28 inch pike.  Figures drive 160 miles and catch what I catch pike.  Was happy to get my jig back.  Then the fun started.  No idea how many bass I caught but it was almost non stop for 6 hours.  Most were 1-3 pound fish either protecting beds or in the shade.  They definitely like the jig swimming with a chigger craw tail.  By the end almost all the skirt was gone but they didn't care. Not sure how many chigger craws I used but the boat took a while to clean up back a the launch.   Thanks for the tips on the lake.  Was going to head out to a couple humps on my map but ran out of time.

People ask about fishing tips on jig fishing.   Do it or 6 hours and you learn a lot.
