First Trip a bit Costly

I got out yesterday on the Maggies stretch. I took my dad who fishes only a handful of times a year. However, he just retired and vows to make it out more this year. Its always a good time with him. Catching fish is not secondary, but its a little less important.

Nevertheless, it was a terrible day. First off, the current is pretty strong as you can imagine. Its not terrible, I've seen worse, but it played a negative factor. I was honestly going after walleye. I got some minnows and was going to fish eddies I've caught them at before. (Someone showed me how to do this in December and convinced me it would be a good idea yesterday.) Well, those eddies were not eddies. The current was so swift, my eddy areas were hardly slowing the current. I caught nothing and then decided it was time to go after bass before I left. I searched some channels to check out the water temp and it was the same there as the main river, 43. I didn't find a scale. I checked out a few main river points and found lots of baitfish holding on them. That certainly was the ticket, but when I finally figured this out with some certainty and some light ticks, I had to go. So I started off the year getting blanked and I'm pretty certain I could catch fish if I would have target these areas w/ shaky worms and/or tubes & jigs. I would do this all day if I was to go back.

Oh well, the worse part was yet to come. My dad backed the trailor into the water. He put the truck in park, I & he thought, so I was going forward with the boat, when all of a sudden the truck/trailor came rolling at me!! (He only put in neutral when he thought it was in park.) The boat missed the back side of the truck by inches, but it completely destroyed the hook that the winch strap connects to and tore up the fiberglass by it (this hit the trailor). So, just like all of last season, the boat is going back into the shop today or tomorrow. Kind of a costly experience.

Good to be on the water, but heck getting off!

The river has not been kind to you. Very sorry about your continued bad luck there.
My normal partner also has a habit of leaving the truck either in N or D. So far he's only done it in the parking lot, not on the ramp but I'm sure something a bit more interesting is soon to come.
Look past what they want you to see.

Hope you have better luck next time ???
