I'm planning on moving to a new server within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Just a little friendly warning as there might be a few hours of odd behavior when the process starts. I will try to have it done at night or weekend.

Again I am new so don't beat me up to bad!!!!..
What kind of knot should I use for drop shotting???? I saw a show where they used a Double Uni-knot...I tried that what a pain in the rear..I saw KVD uses a polymer knot..I tied that it was simple and worked great..I guess I shouldn't be asking if KVD says it is good, but I thought I would see what everyone was using.

Also is it true you should only use the polymer knot on Flourocarbon??
I have always used a trilene knot on mono and I have hard time giving up something that works.

Has anyone tried a drop shot for vertical jigging the river for Walleyes??
I know they aren't bass, but they sure taste good..

I use a palomar knot for drop shotting (when I have done it...I don't really do it much).   As for only using a palomar on flouro?  I think it's mostly personal preference.  I use a palomar knot for pretty much everything.  As with any line (especially flouro) I think it is more important to wet the knot with spit or water before cinching it than the actual knot itself.

Palomar knot is the overall best. Here's the other sneaky trick: tie your Palomar knot and then take the tag end of your line and run it through the top of the hook eye down.

This will twist your knot into the hook eye and help your hook hang vertical easier.

Any fish that suspends off the bottom - many do - is at risk from the dropshot!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I dont know if these are new or not, but I saw them while flipping through the bass pro catalog.  Says it allows the bait to stay in an upright position.  THe website says to just tie a polamar knot through the top eye, then run the tag through the bottom eye.

You should check out the classic patterns Iaconelli finesse video.  He really gets into detail and gives away some very good stuff.  Well worth the $20, will get you more than caught up.  I use a polomar, with floro.  I usually leave a little more tag and always wet the knot.  You won't need the standout hooks if you tie the polomar right.

I use palomar for everything.  I dont recall ever breaking off due to knot failure.  Dan's advice about looping back through the hook eye is sound advice.  The key is you want that hook perpendicular to the line with the hook point up.

Cheetam gives good advice about wetting the knot before cinching it down.  Draw the knot tight very SLOWLY.  Dont create friction.  Copoly and fluoro will cut right into itself if you create too much friction and heat it up.

BGH,

Thanks for posting that picture.  That hook looks really promising.  I had never heard of it but you can bet I'll be trying it this season.

I use palomar for everything I can.  When I need something else, I tie the double clinch (trilene).

For dropshot, when you put the tag end back through the eye of the hook, do not pull the knot through the eye.  Just rotated enough to get the hook to stand out.  Pulling the knot through the eye will put a small kink in your line and when you set the hook, you yank the knot back through further kinking the line.  I did this a few times when I started dropshotting and lost a few fish from the line breaking at the knot.

I use the palomar knot on everything including the dropshot, in the past I used to use the trilene knot too but I had a few hooks pull off and all I got back was curly line.

I do sometimes use a 3 to 4 inch leader when dropshotting and tie a totaly different knot that makes my leader called a drop loop I use this for sluggish fish and plastic worms it gives them a few inches of slack to suck it in before they feel resistance remember bass usualy suck things in not bite them so it helps if theres a little give, next time you see me I will be glad to show you but I will try to explain it, take the middle of your line fold it back on itself to make a 4" circle wrap the folded part of the line around itself 3 times then bring the bottom of the loop between the wrapped lines and wet and sinch if you do it right you end up with a loop leader that looks like a trilene knot on each side then you just put the loop through the hook eye then the hook through the loop, I try not to use this knot on less than 10 to 12 lb line becouse its not as strong as a palomar.

speaking of knot strength I have done extensive testing on several knots many years back on a scale to test the break strength of each knot and several kinds of monofiliment as well, the palomar knot was the only knot I didnt lose strength with and trilene xt and maxima were far superior to other lines like p line silver thread and stren, I also used a file against the mono under a full load and trilene and maxima were twice as durable as the other lines mentioned, I also did shock tests and had the same results but p line was totaly unable to handle shock it just broke every time!

line technology has changed some since the 1990's so things may have improved since then but I stick with what I know.

I think I've been on the board for nearly two years now and you're the first person I'm aware of that has mentioned Maxima.

Altough I don't use as much of it as I used to, it is the only mono I throw.

Kind of funny when I mention Maxima to a lot of people, their reply is generally, "Isn't that for Salmon fishing?"

My day just got brighter!!!

thanks alot for all of the info..it is a big help..I am starting to gain confidence in the polymer knot and I am probably going to make it my knot of choice..Now I just have to try out some of these new lines and see what works for me..
