Saw the Alabama Rig in person, in action, and up close yesterday!

Ed got his in the mail last late last week, and it didn't catch a dang thing!!  Of course... neither did anything else we threw.  Ed, Marc, and myself tried our hand on Gull Lake yesterday.  It was a nice day for fishing... a terrible day for catching.  One nice sized perch on a senko was all we had to show for our efforts.  Oh, and one lost-at-the-boat pike.

I will say this about the 'Bama Rig... it looks dang cool coming thru the water.  It is a heavy sucker to cast and retrieve though!!!

Mike,

So what tails, swim baits or grubs were rigged up on the rig?

Waterfoul

He had 4" swim baits on 1/4 oz jigheads.  Not sure of the manufacturer though.

But like I said, it sure looked sweet coming back to the boat thru the water.

I built a couple for us to use. Looked really good in the water. especially when you stop it and they spread out. 6 hours of fishing and only a couple of followers

Are you going to sell them?

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

No wonder it was heavy to cast.  LOL

I thought I read that the common weight of the whole rig many were fishing on Guntersville was between 2 and 4 ounces. That's more like peacock bass fishing.

So is everyone throwing these on flippin' sticks or what?

djkimmel

I think many anglers will do that though some are throwing them on longer swim bait rods.

Good article on the Alabama Rig in this month's issue of Bassmaster.  I guess you can't argue with success & no doubt other presentations would put fish in the boat under the same conditions but nothing will be able to put 19-7 lbs of smallies in the boat on one cast!

djkimmel

Good point! The number of big bass being caught to the south with these rigs is amazing! I will definitely be throwing castable umbrella rigs this coming season! Temped to get one and take it to Brazil but I don't think my heart is that strong!!

This might help some of you organize all you new swim baits who have already decided to win some tournaments and/or catch a bunch of big bass this season on castable umbrella rigs: Columbia Customs Swimbait Boxes from Bass Tackle Depot
