Smithwick Devil Horse

Anyone ever use these.  Been wathing the Florida tounrys and the seem to be used by a lot of guys.  So I ordered some.  They look like a Rapala with propellers.  Something else to play with this spring.   Besides any bait with the name Smith in it can't be all bad.

Devil horses are great baits.  I still hav a few layin around.  They require a little tweaking when u get em buts easy stuff and makes em work better

I've got a couple, barely you them. I took one out the other day to Belleville Lake to show my nephew it's action. If you go Peacock Bass fishing, it's the standard bait, Not that I have been, but I've watched a lot of shows. Yea, they do require tweaking. Got two Dying Flutters by Heddon, one Rattlin Torpedo by Heddon, one Heddon wounded Spook and a couple of Fishsticks by Luhr Jenson. All are prop baits. You can cast them a mile but sometimes the line gets tangled in the prop.

My dad has several of them that he bought back in the day.  He actually threw one last year when we went to Crockery lake, and caught fish on it.  We used to throw them quite often when we lived in Louisiana.  Worked really well when the bass were schooling.

been reading more.  Terry Scroggins fishes them a lot.   says they are great for locating fish on beds.   If he misses he follows up with a soft bait. 

better get to be spring soon.  The wife asked how many more UPS orders are on the way.

They work really well when there's too much chop on the water to fish a standard topwater lure.  They make a lot of commotion!

I used these a lot growing up in Florida...it's a very popular bait down there. In fact, I have a few buddies down there that do well in tournamnets and they fish it almost exclusively. They call it a "donkey" down there.

Ok I'll bite what a Wood Choppah.   If Cheetam is involved it must be a crankbait thing.

He is just going to laugh at me throwing my Devil Horse while he is chuckin them weed pullin pretty painted crankers.

the wood chopper is, i think, the original name for that style bait.

What tackle are you guys throwing these on? I have a couple originals and a couple customs made in Texas and whenever I throw them the line tends to get hung up in the hooks. I've only tried with spinning gear though since the ones I have are pretty light. I know guys in my area of Mississippi like these a lot too.

I'm still working on the Wood Chopper workout tape from my peacock bass adventure. Got to get in shape for the 2012 Peacock Bass adventure (still a few openings huston - you should go!?!). Pretty much throwing a small tree with a couple metal blades (or 4).

I like the Devil's Horse, though I haven't thrown one in a few seasons (too many lures not enough time). They have their time when they produce very well. I fondly recall some past tournaments where they caught key bass. Very popular in Florida and we have a lot of similar water... hmmm..?

Man, that's a great offer. This is my first year of retirement and I really want to get better on LSC, so I want to focus on it. Since we started discussing those prop baits, I guess I'll put a few in the boat. They are a lot of work with all the casting. It looks like fuel prices are going to be an issue though.

The Devil Horse has always been a good bait on White Lake in Oakland County.  It is a tackle box staple when I fish that lake.  The largies there just pound that bait when the conditions are right, which seem to be every time I have thrown it there.
