This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

I just got back from fishing the CFT New Ark Open on Lake Simcoe.  Lake Simcoe is located about an hour north of Toronto and has to be close to the best if not the best big smallmouth destination in the north. The Tournament was the biggest money bass tournament in Canada paying out $100,000 for first.

The wieghts and big fish were gigantic.  The first day I jerked up a respectable limit of 21.45 for five and found myself in 18th place.  The second day I commited mental suicide and wieghed in 11.15 pounds for 38th place.  The tournament payed down to 30th and I needed to make a comeback to get a check.  Well my amatuer partner Justin Walker saved me.  The tournament works the same as most walleye tournaments where the pro and am both get the wieght of their combined 5 biggest fish.  We had mostly Justin's 25.65 pounds anchored by Justin's 7.00 pound smallmouth.  We thought we would have big bass of the day locked up, but got knocked out by a 7.25.  Whats even more unbelievable that was not big fish for the tournament, big fish of the tournament was a 7.60 pound smallmouth.

I finished a respectable 12th with 58.25 for three days and Justin finished 9th on the amatuer side. The winning wieght was an incredible 73.35.

I thought that some of you looking for a big bass destination would be interested in fishing there and if they have the tournament next year might be interested in fishing.

That must have really been atime, Its Rich Soderquist(I was with you when you won on St.Clair a few years back). Glad to see you on-line. I will add this to my destinations. We have been doing OK in the CATT tourneys. Won two including last thursday on Pine lake. Hope all is well with your family. Glad to see you doing good in the BFL. What was the predominant pattern that won the event? :)
Talk soon Rich

Those are some pretty serious numbers right there! Wow!

The last time I was at Simcoe we were ice fishing for perch. We were relieved of our 4 wheelers in the middle of the night - they picked 'em up and carryed 'em about 400 yards down the road, sounds like the smallies are big and strong too!
Look past what they want you to see.
