The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Found this today while reading the DNR lake erie report

"Koi Virus
In June 2011, a large carp kill occurred in Kent Lake, Oakland County. Up to 500 large carp were found dead in the lake. Samples were collected and the cause of the die-off was determined to be koi herpesvirus (KHV). KHV affects common carp, goldfish, and koi and is specific to those fish species. KHV is not likely to affect native minnow species and there are no human health effects. KHV had not been previously found in wild fish samples in Michigan until this year, but was detected in a private koi pond near Grand Rapids in 2003. A second incidence was confirmed in August in Silver Lake in Oceana County. The underlying reasons for the emergence and spread of KHV in Michigan remain under investigation"

Never heard a reason last year

I wonder if that would kill Big Head Carp? Just a thought.

FishermanJohn

Interesting.  Thank you for finding and sharing that article.  I had never seen so many dead fish of one species like that before.

It can take a while for these things to be diagnosed and reported out. I don't know about the Bighead carp question but I do know that introducing one pest to take care of another often goes awry.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
