Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

Just wondering how black lake fishes this time of yr. ill be at my inlaws house in about a week or 2 probably fishing out of a kayak and just wondering how the bite is. Where should i start looking this time of year. Never fished that far up north at all actually lol.

If you get a real good cold drop, the smallmouth bass just disappear but otherwise this time of year most of them will be in the NW corner of the lake between the reed beds out from the Black River. I've only fished there once in the spring - easy - and 4 or 5 times in the fall.

Fall success depended on warming spells verses cooling spells. On the bad cold spells the fishing was tough to nothing. Pretty good to weird on the warming spells. I only saw a few bass, a couple muskie and a sturgeon running around the rest of the lake. I've been told there are a few, small hot spots elsewhere but I didn't find them in my limited searching. If you get a strong South wind, it can get pretty rough in the north but you can go into the Black River and catch big pike!

Strong north wind don't be anywhere in the south end. I got caught trying to get into that little state park ramp in 3 to 5 footers and messed up my hull thanks to some kids who didn't get out of my way at the dock. You'd think they'd get out of the way at the one dock rather than sit there looking at you with the intelligence of a cud-chewing heifer! Especially when you are shouting, "GET OUT OF THE WAY!" That was not one of my more fun days.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
