This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

anyone know of someone that makes a stronger rope? I have broken the pull rope on 2 different trolling motors, both while in tourneys and it takes quite awhile to fix on the water. Is there one made of something better?

LAPORTE

If I were you.  I would go to the lawn and garden shop and get some rope used for starting lawnmowers. Our ACE hardware down the street has some.  you purchase it by the foot.

I fell from the front of the boat to the back twice last year when the TM rope broke. Pretty funny for everyone but me.

Do you have some video of that by any chance?? ;D

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I've seen plastic coated steel cable that works really well.  You should be able to get it at a hardware or home improvement store.  Get some cable clamps to hold it where the knots would go.

Right now I'm using 5/50 cord on mine.  5/50 cord is a military thing, you can get it a Gander Mountain or I would guess at Army surplus place.  It is small diameter and really tough.  So far it is working great.

Lawn mower rope is not just avg. rope... it seems to last longer than most. Maybe because it is a blend of synthetics ??? I know you can leave a push mower out in the weather every day. They seem to just last quite awhile... Someone needs to try it and when you fall out of the boat... well we could just have a laugh. (as long as you dont get hurt)

decided to go with stainless cable, found a "soft" one thats pretty flexible.

Revtro

If it works well for you, let us know.  I tried that last year and the cable just bound up in the trolling motor.  Mine's a Motorguide.  I ended up having to stick with rope.  I've broken mine a dozen times over the past several years.  Annoying as heck!

I used a cable cover (Snap-On Cable Cover, 3/16" Wire Dia.) which is used in sailing. I saw this tip on a bulletin board somewhere. It fits over your rope and snugs down in the hole to prevent fraying of the rope.

For less than $3 you can get enough for a lifetime!

I used 5/32 stainless rope, had to use a long loop over the pin to attach to the eye. The crimp would have bound on the pin if I crimped close to the eye. I gotta say it is ALOT easier to lift now, I assume because there is no stretch in the cable. I tried to post pics, but failed for those of you who want to see:http://www.flickr.com/photos/32694171@N06/sets/72157614628822596/

+1 on the mower rope, that's what used when mine broke, works great

Bender

fowlmouth, is that coated cable? I'm wondering about using something like a vinyl coated piece of cable like used to tie up a dog outside. I think that would give you the best of both worlds. Also did you crimp it again under the handle or did you tie a knot in it?

I didn't use coated due to rust, I wanted it to be able to dry completely. I should have put a pic up of the end, I crimped it with a stop then used a die grinder to smooth it out and filled with solder.
