Driving a point !

Does anyone have any experiance driving a point well.

I need to get access to water on my property up north and figured this would be a easy solution. How do I know how deep to go, or how deep the water table is?

I have already reserched how to actually drive it into the ground, What kind of point, pipe, couplings to use ect... I just dont know how to find out how deep the water table is.

really all you can do is ask the neighbors what their water depths are and kind of hope for the best.  i believe there are geo. charts available for each county that might have info too, but really it tends to be a crap shoot, unless you can visibly see a flowing spring, its a guessing game. 

NOT TO SCARE YOU..BUT...  i had a well drilled up north about 6 years ago, my neighbor was at 81feet for his well, I had the well driller come out and give me an estimate, which he based on 175feet "so we were covered"...when he was done and i had clear water, we were at 385feet    I about had a heart attack!  I literally thought it was a joke and he was trying to rip me off!  but it was real....tangent i guess....but driving a point is a good way to go for what I'm assuming is a cabin or second house.  people have been doing it for years...
