This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Got a report from the boys, here goes: Got on the road about 1:00 friday afternoon after a stop at sams club for gummi bears and barley pop. Everything was going great until they hit Clevland. There is a small light on the dash that says fuel low. I guess they didnt pay attention until the motor stopped running. Luckiley they were doing 100mph and managed to coast to the fuel pump. Filled er up and back on the road. Made it to the hotel at 3:00 am and were told check in is 3Pm not am so you have to wait. They decided to sleep a bit under the stars and enjoy the skeeters. They awoke at 6:00 am to the sound of boat motors and went to the dock of the hotel to find all of the Elite series tournament competetors idleing through. They said it was one of the greatest moments in their lives. The only better one was when They met me. This report came in via phone message at 2:30 pm Saturday afternoon and they Just saw there first piggly wiggly. You should have heard the excitement in Poorboys voice. I think he thought the piggly wiggly was a pick up joint. I will keep all of you posted as info comes my way.

Oh boy. That's one fun place to fish. Zillions of nooks and crannies to explore.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

dartag

did they take a boat to fish this week before there tournament?????

fishon1219

Talked to the boys again last night. First to answer dartag they took josh's boat with them. When I talked to them poorboy was already celebrating a little bit. He caught his biggest bass ever. It weighed 7lbs. He caught it on a white tube. They are not catching a lot of fish. He said they only caught 4 yesterday and 4 on sunday. The fish on beds are pretty much picked over with a lot of gar pike swimming in the bedding areas. Poor boy was bored on sunday and lost his favorite spinner bait to a monster dogfish. Thats all they had to report as they were on there way to a local gentleman's club so you can tell they sure didnt want to talk to me. They are going to call me again tonight with another report.

PB sounded more proud of the fact that he was able to buy a can of Kodiak for $2.33 in SC than he was with catching a 7lber.  Him and Josh are having a blast...I'm JEALOUS!!
Jeff

Hopefully he packed enough bottles, for spitters....Kodiak will be PB's next sponsor, mark my words...he already has the perfect slogan...."I'm no quitter!"   ;D

I'm glad the trip is turning out great for them, you never know they get a couple good draws and who knows we could see them right up there on the leaderboard, that would be awesome...I wonder if PB would trim his "goat" for that?

I'm anxious to hear who they will fish with...

Talked to the boys again last night. Josh caught his biggest bass ever it was a 6 1/2. They are not catching alot of fish. They say we wouldnt belive the amount of pockets and back areas in these lakes. They would go into one pocket and see lots of beds and no fish and go into another and it would be loaded with bucks. A cold front blew through yesterday and pushed the fish out. They are now awaiting the start of the tournament. They both sound like they are wore out. I dont know if it is because of all of the fishing or the fact that they probably arent going to bed until 3am. Anyway they are having a great time and looking forward to the start of the tourny.

I have to get back there some day during the spawn - very complex lakes with so many different types of fishing available.

I hope they are being careful too. Possibly more lower end eating places on those lakes than anywhere else I've ever been.

I love the blastoff across the big lake - Marion - each morning where 2 or 3 guys would rip full speed right through the standing forest!!! :o  "Channel!?! We don't need no stinking channel?!?"

Shoot. I couldn't idle 10 feet into the forest without hitting a tree. I asked one of the guys I know from there - Brent Riley - and he said it's easy. You just run from the biggest, baddest tree to the next one because the big trees are "loners" so there won't be any other trees nearby...?!!!??!!

I could not bring myself to test his theory. (Actually, I've heard the lakes a LITTERED with lower units... ::))

When I talked with PB on Tuesday, he said he and Josh were splitting up yesterday, and fishing with a couple Boaters they had met to try and learn some more water.  After that they were heading to the pairings meeting.  PB was supposed to call if he drew a big name (I guess Scroggins and a couple of the other dudes from the Elite Series are sticking around to fish the Southern).  He must not have drawn a big name, or he did and got so swept up with emotion that he forgot to call us poor suckers in MI...

UPDATE:
It's a sight fisherman's tourney in SC, and PB zeroed day one and Josh caught one (about 2-3 pounds).  Apparently, not too many co-anglers brought fish to the scales while PB was there (there was something like 6 flights to go after his flight weighed in so that could change).  Good news though, PB has drawn his idol (and sight fisherman extraordinaire) Terry Scroggins for day two and is hoping he will give him an opportunity to catch some fish (he didn't have too many today) and an opportunity or two to pick his brain.
Jeff

Standings are posted....Josh is in 33rd place with 2-05.  PB is in a tie for 59th...Two or three big bites and they could definitely move up the standings...1st place is only 8-10!

Well if Josh is going to catch only 1 fish, and he's 8# out, he'd best make it a big un!

Well, Josh has lived to fish another day (he's in the top thirty and will be fishing day three) but our compadre Poorboy has not.  He had a good day on the water watching Scroggins pull in a 20+ pound bag and said he has picked up some tips that are going to make him a bed fishing stud this year...more updates to come...
Jeff

djkimmel

I'm not sure I can allow the term 'bed fishing stud' on the forum. I will have to consult with the FAA or FCC or NBA (or is it URL? - I can't remember). ;D
