The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Went back to Round Lake again and had another pretty good day for fishing in a small row boat on a small lake.

I could see the scattered, nervous schools of small gills and minnows again with the obvious blasting of them by bass every few minutes so it was time to put on the topwater again. Not ever a bad idea usually first thing in the morning. I quickly caught a few on a Splash-it that is more of a stealth popper with a flatter face and quieter rattles.

As I watched the schools of bait I could sometimes spot where the better bass were blasting them and would once again target those specific areas resulting in some building bass size like this one. It's a baby bass Splash-it with a whitish pearl hologram belly.

The topwater bite lasted quite awhile but as the breeze picked up during the day the topwater action steadily slowed.

I returned to an early morning spot that produced a number of small keepers and tossed an electric blue Power Worm Texas-rigged with a 3/8 oz Tungsten bullet weight to the back side of a weed bed with an opening in it creating a possible funnel area. I made a long cast and hooked my biggest bass of the day around 3 pounds right away.

I caught a few more small bass and small keepers on the same electric blue Power Worm before calling it another good day of fishing!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
