Grand River is High and Treacherous!

Grand River/Spring Lake, Grand Haven MI, 6/3/01 – Tried to fish the river out of Riverside Park on Saturday afternoon. Be careful! The mighty Grand is high and extremely fast. Big trees are floating everywhere and the current is strong enough to make the ramp dangerous. It’s going to take a while to calm down. I looked for bass getting out of the torrent in the big gravel pit with only a dink and half-hearted bite to show for it.

Spring Lake was another story on Sunday. The fishing was actually pretty good considering what it was the last time I was there a couple years ago. There are a few bass still on beds, but they are mostly small. The water temps were 59 to 61 thanks to the long cold spell we’ve had. The real shocker is that there are almost no weeds. The few stalks and patches make the lake look bald compared to the huge mats I remember. Don’t know the story there yet.

The bass were good-sized and fairly aggressive considering all the fishing pressure I saw. Right now, it looks like the bayous will be very popular with the high, very fast, chilly, muddy water in the river…at least until that changes and we see how fast the bass recover. Please be careful in the channels.
