You can do it now! No more 'guilty by bass boat' so you can fish for whatever you want and feel comfortable about doing it without harassment!

Just be safe out there in this new 'opening' day Michigan wind! I'll be heading out the next 3 days to enjoy our new bass fishing since it has been a looooooonngg 9 seasons for me to now start bass fishing as soon as I could go. I want to remember what it feels like to be out there at the crack of winter's end!

Got out this afternoon for a few hours on a W. MI lake. Water was 48 degrees and slightly muddy, caught 4 smallies and a monster brown trout.  I threw plastics, swimbait, lipless crank, and shadow rap. Caught my first smallie of the year on my fifth cast. Felt great to finally set some hooks.  Caught my other 3 smallies throwing a 3" swimbait slow rolled along the bottom in 8-12 feet of water.  All the fish caught on the swimbait absolutely choked the bait.  I caught the brown trout on the shadow rap.  The fish jumped out of the water 3 times, I thought it was a steelie until I got it to the boat.  I had to release the fish in the water because I forgot my net and didn't want to risk getting trebles in my hand.  Wish I could have gotten a picture of the fish, it was beautiful. Great to get out on the lake.

Well we made it out today, but not for that long.  Dad woke up feeling like crap.  I told him we didn't have to go but he wanted to get the boat out and run it a bit and make sure it was running good for Thursday when we head to the Det. River.  We got there around 12:30, He wanted to wait at the dock and I made few runs around the lake. The Triton TR-21 and Merc 225 optimax ran pretty good for the first time out.  We tried fishing for a few hours, didn't catch anything, and he was feeling worse, so we called it a day.  It was nice to get out for a least a little bit though.   Having never fished this early in the year I had no idea what depths to target and what kind of areas to look for...any ideas??  Water temps were around 45 btw.

Snapped this pic while we were out there...it was/is a beautiful day to be out on the water.

Here's my first bass of the new 2015 Michigan bass season - a solid smallie that ate a craw-colored Red-eye shad slowly retrieved in very cold, muddy Muskegon Lake water while fishing with fishstick!

Great pic. That smallie looks like he's saying, "hey, that's the guy that worked so hard on getting the CIR season opened year round. I'd get an autograph if I could but I have this dang hook stuck in my mouth!" Thanks Dan for your work in getting the season changed.

djkimmel

You're welcome. I'm enjoying it! Saw a good number of bass boats out there doing the same!

No pics but i got on portage today.  One 18" smallie in two hours.   Jerk bait was the ticket.  Water temps were 45 to 51.
So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

I got a 5# out of Wolf Lake yesterday. Black and blue Kustom Kicker Dock Monkey with Nemesis black and blue Bullet Craw trailer.

Mike... I don't know how your pictures end up rotated all over the place but I fixed them for you with a default square rotated back to vertical. You probably will only see the fixed version of the picture if you do a Ctrl F5 (control refresh) of this browser page to force your browser to load the new version of the picture.

Thanks for sharing and congrats on the big bass. My biggest so far have been a couple of ~3 1/2 pound largemouth bass but I'm going to keep working on it later this week I hope.

Hey Bro,

I hate to point out the obvious, but just because you are not violating game laws does not mean that you are no longer an outlaw.  Just saying.

Mike S.

Dan, my phone hates me. That's all I can think of.

djkimmel

Sorry to hear that Mike S.!! :D (I'm laughing with you)

Dan, have you noticed that my avatar doesn't show either? It should. It's even a picture from my gallery.
