Newton Lake is on fire
« on: February 24, 2011, 04:33:47 PM »

Just got back from a two day trip to Newton. I would highley recommend anyone to take a trip down there right now. The big females are eating. In the two days we were there we caught more than twenty bass over 4lbs, four over 5lbs and one over 6lbs. We figure we caught about 75 bass in between the two of us. We couldnt get bit on moving baits but they were very willing to eat a jig. It didnt seem to matter what color or size. They were pretty shallow, in 2 to 4 feet. If you do plan on going take alot of jigs, we lost alot of them in the brush and rocks that we were fishing. I do have pictures and I will be posting them a little later. This was a well needed break from this snow and the frozen lakes.

Oh and by the way dont laugh at my hat, it was cold. These were some of the fish we caught on the second day (Wensday) Didnt have the camera Tuesday (Ben said he had one and the batteries were dead of course) so I took them on my cell so they arent going to be very good and they are going to take a little longer to put them up, but Im working on it.

Dick,
Its in Illinois, just east of Effingham. Straight down 57 from Chicago, 388 miles from my house. I do have more information but thats going to cost you a trip to Newton.

I'm not sure I could work a trip in this year, but could you give me some more information??? From what I have heard this is a warm water discharge lake.  Isn't there a motor size limit??  How big is it and is it super crowded on the weekends??  Any suggestions on accomodations??  Thanks in advance for the info.  :)   Jeff

Yes it is a warm water discharge lake. There is a cold side and a warm side, you can catch them on both sides all year but in the cold of the winter the warm side is the best. There is a 25 hp limit on the lake. Doesnt mean you cant go there with your bass boat, all it means is that you cant use a motor bigger than a 25hp to move around the lake. I went there two years ago with my bassboat and still caught fish, it just takes longer to get up by the powerplant. We went with a 16ft aluminum with a 25hp on it this time and could cover alot more water. I would suggest if you have one or can get one like this to do so. I havent been there on the weekend so Im not sure if it is crowded or not but I know on Wensday when we were there I counted 22 truck and trailers in the parking lot. So Im guessing its quite busy on the weekend. As far as accommodations we stay in Newton, less than 10 miles away at a hotel in town for 50 bucks a night for two. They have power hookups for the boats. Not a four star hotel but fine for a fishing trip.

Its not to bad but when they are all on the warm side you do run into them quite abit. BUT there are alot of fish to be caught so its not that bad.

I would send a picture, but then I would have to deal with all the new attention.

I was going to ask if you killed the muskrat before you put it on your head, or was it still alive, but you appear to be sensitive about it... ;D

Very jealous! All I've been doing is writing about and taking picture of other people fishing and now this!! I may have to take my ice rod to D&R Sports this Saturday (the fish tank)...

Yep it is a beaver, it was alive when I put it there. I did smell something pretty rotten while out fishing but I thought it was Ben so I didnt say anything, Maybe it was just my beaver(hat) and it died..........
