As far as getting out in the southern end of the Detroit River or Western basin of Lake Erie close to the river what launches thaw out first to get into the hot ponds. Sterling State Park seems to be a good one but I was wondering if another launch opened up earlier than that. Thanks.

Skulley

They all seem to open up around the same time.  I don't think it matters.  You do want to watch out for icebergs.  You don't want to go down like the Titanic.  You don't want to go to the river when flows are still coming down it.

Be careful. I have seen in early spring when a launch would open up and then the wind would change and blow the ice back in and guys could not get back to the launch.

watching guys bore holes this morning there must be 18-20 inches of ice with a foot of snow on top of it.  going to be a little while.  I did see it could be near 40 monday.  that should melt a little.

Some guys on BBC posted some good bass caught apparently in the Hot Hole in Monroe. They were from Mi and launched somewhere down there, Had pics too

GPaquette

can you send me a link to that please

djkimmel

Just please remember, no out of season fishing reports (especially with evidence) on here. Thanks.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Mile Roads are open in spots but ice still prevails from 50 to 100 yards out, Boles Harbor is best early bet for launch (for hot pond) -- last year 2010 went out March 17.
Perch are scarce and small around 10 and 11 mile. The 50 degree weather today and Friday with SW wind should remove most ice along shoreline.

I love my bass fishing but man I can't wait for the Detroit River walleye bite to start. Should be able to get out safely in about two weeks. ;D

I was at the Clinton River cutoff ramp today and from there to Metro, all I saw was fisherman and ice shanties.

bassfan586

Casting from shore on hte windmill flat.  Lots of ice moving down.  2-3 weeks tops safley.
Got one!

bassfan586

Saw the first boat out near shipping channel today by the radar station.  A few Icebergs but not many

This is a shot of LSC yesterday 3/17/11. I wouldn't head out yet. We have had a strong West wind the last two days pushing it all to the East side but it will be back.

Revtro

Where did you get that shot?  I looked around for a good source of Sat images and haven't found any as nice as that one.  Just curious.  Pretty cool...thanks for posting it.

They update it every 4 hours. You just have to hope there is no cloud cover.

This was last years ice jam on the river.   later in the spring you will see how much mud the feeder rivers put in the lake.

I drove out to Anchor Bay on Friday to have lunch at the park...There was open water...I talked to a mailman that was having lunch too and he said they were Ice fishing out on that exact spot on Thursday... ::)  Crazy Ice fisherman...

I know a Walleye pro that ripped a chunk of his Ranger 620VS off last year trying to sneak out a little early on the River after he hit an ice chunk......So if you go be careful...

LennyB

I know on the the Dertroit River you really have to be care the frist two weeks after ice-out due to everything coming down that broke lose over the winter. A buddy of mine ran into a dock the was floating down that was submerge about 6" onder the service and broke several ribs. His partner was thrown from the boat it 38 dergee water, ooch!!! There will be full size trees, telephone poles, docks, you name it caming down.
