Monday, May 01, 2006

THE SAGINAW NEWS

More fishermen than fish attended the 21st annual Freeland Walleye Festival this weekend.

The festival -- called a "a major success" by volunteer Garret F. Geer -- lured 412 anglers, 27 more than last year's 385, said Geer, promotions committee chairman for the Freeland Lions Club. However, fish weights were down.

Saturday's 1,048.85 pounds of fish in the senior division and 154.8 pounds in the junior division, combined with Sunday's 625.9 and 88.9, respectively, totaled of 1,918.45 pounds of fish -- less than last year's 2,475 pounds of fish.

Martin "Marty" Jastrzembowski had the biggest fish at 7.8 pounds and also took first with a total of 54.8 pounds.

Second place was Kevin Waier with 43.85 pounds over two days; Kal Ustishon won third place was with 38.20 pounds over two days.

In the junior division, Austin Tamasek came out on top with 29 pounds, followed by Greg Gorsline Jr. with 22.75 and Nichole Kisser with 20.85.
