The picture of the fish in the livewell is nuts:

It took 20 pounds to crack the top ten in a 21 boat tournament. It's only a couple hours from where I live so I think I'll have to head up there next year.

Ya thats been floating around the net for awhile very impressive. I thought there has been some 30+ pound bags of smallmouth cought from Erie (assuming in canada) in tournaments in the past so how is that a tournament record?

i have heard of a 28+ lb bag from charlevoix and obviously Pipkens big 27+ lb bag from Burt/Mullet.  Heard of 27ish lb bags from Erie ( didnt Trombley just have 26 lbs 13 oz or something like that?)  but i have never heard of a 30+ lb bag of smallies caught anywhere, tournament or not.  to think that most people will spend there lives never catching a 6lb smallmouth and these studs go out and catch 5 ( and were throwing back who knows how many 5+ lbers).  the crazy part is you know its only a matter of time before that weight gets trumped.

Balog told me about Clapper catching 31 and 32 pound bags from Erie, not sure if that was in a tournament or not though. I know Tony Defellipo (sp) cought a 30 pound bag in a tournament in Grand Traverse Bay a few years back (think it was NBAA) but the article claimed it is a Canadian record for smallmouth cought in a tournament so that wouldnt be relevant.

No need to go that far, plenty of places that will put up weight like that if you hit it right in the spring or fall.  The biggest tournament weight I can remember was a charlevoix a few years back with an 8.5lb big fish.  Never thought that big fish weight was correct, anyone have any pics?

In a small boat number tourney i can see it very possible to get 30lbs at burt and mullet.. what Chad has done the last 2 years is unbelievable with 100 of some of the best fisherman around. we all find em

Yeah, but those are Canadien pounds... don't you have to divide by 2, add your shoe size, and multiply by the square root of Gov. Jenny's (she's Canadien... remember?) IQ????

Whatever the conversion... those are some awsome fish!!

(yes I know a pound is a pound is a pound... unless we're talking Brittish pounds... then we're off into another conversion chart!!)

It's a rare feat regardless. I thought I recalled Chuck Economou doing that a number of years ago on Pickwick in a BASS event? But it might not have been 30? I just recall it was a big sack of smallies. Seems like they speculated it was one of the biggest at the time.

It probably is the biggest bag from Canada. Biggest I've heard of anyway.

These seem to be the good ole days...

There was another team somewhere on the west side who weighed in 29-something of largemouths a number of years back. I forget what circuit, but I think it involved Phil Smathers. And it seems like there was another well over 25 of 4 smallies someone weighed in out of Lake Michigan!?!

A guy my buddies know that built a house on Paw Paw lake has a weigh in slip that reads over 32 pounds from a tournament on of course Paw Paw Lake. I was told it was many years ago though and obviously all largemouth, he does not tournament fish anymore but still catches giants out there on a regular basis just for fun.

There was a story in one of the magazines years ago about Indiana natives Czanderna and Nelson (I think that's their names and who it was?) using their big crankbait prowess to land a massive limit out of Paw Paw Lake that include a 9 1/2 pounder!! I can't recall if it was in a tournament or not but remember they fished tournaments and won many with big catches with the big crankbaits. They were known for catching limits that averaged from 5 to almost 10 pounds way back when!!
