Anyone have any tips or experience on Sam Rayburn in Texas

Heading to Lake Sam Rayburn in Texas for the Big Bass Splash tourney and was wondering if anyone has had any experience on this lake or tips.  I have never fished any where but Michigan.  And my partner and are do not have any time to scout the lake.

I've heard rumors about big red traps /spots along the inside weed lines more than once.

I fished there in November of 2007, but it was a weird year.  I hired a guide since I flew into Houston for a wedding.  James something...I'll look him up.  Heckuva nice guy.  The lake was flooded ealry in the year, and then low in the fall which made for a really poor bite.  I ended up catching 11 fish, biggest was about 5 pounds, and it was worth it to me.

Most of our fish came on rattle traps.  If you go on your own, you want to look for gnats.  Yes, I said gnats.  they have these grass gnats that are born in the grass mats.  The worse they are, the better the fishing is.  Reminds me of the mayflys on Erie.  Thick as thieves at times, but if you can ignore them, the fishing is great.  They don't bite, but get stuck to you if you were sunscreen or are sweating.

If you want to win that tournament you fish for one to two bites all day dragging huge baits, 10 plus inch worms, giant creature baits on carolina rigs looking for them around points. Thats what i would do any way because a 5 pounder will not win and I know some guys who fish down there and in those types of tournaments you fish for 1-2 bites and if you get them then you will probably win something. I wouldn't use swimbaits there either.

I agree with Gip.  I have no experience down there but i always watch the Bass Champs shows where they are fishing those big fish tournaments and it seems like all the big ones are caught dragging biggggg baits around on the bottom and a few on various topwater baits.  I would invest in some 10-12" worms and some bulky creatures.
