This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

2008 Detroit River Open - UNBELIEVABLE!For the nearly 200 anglers competing in the 2008 Detroit River Open the beginning of the day started out great. With every team receiving a special sponsors package from the Detroit River Days Festival, Tracker Boats, Anglers Advantage Insurance, WFN and the BFL. The anglers were ready to go and the reports were that this could be one of the best weigh ins on Lake St Clair in some time.

For the majority of the day the sun shined and the temperatures were pleasant. This quickly changed around 2:30 in the afternoon when the sky turned and the rain, hail and high winds hit. Not only did this weather strike just before the anglers were coming to check in, it never stopped. The high winds and rain continued right through weigh in and seemed to never let up.
However, the bad weather did not detour the anglers from their mission of weighing in some great bags of Smallmouth bass. With nearly 60 limits of bronzebacks coming to the scales the team that topped them all was Mark Modrak & Don McCulla (pictured above) with 21.81 pounds. This great team finished second in this event last year but no runner-up prize this year. Mark and Don won a new Tracker PT 190 with a Mercury 115 HP Optimax for their efforts.
Coming in a close second was the team of Todd Koehler & David Carter with 21.76 lbs. Todd and David also took 2nd place big bass honors with a 5.18 smallmouth. Rounding out the top 3 was the team of Dave Reault & Miles Hanley. Dave and Miles weighed in 21.33 pounds. Big Bass honors went to the team of Michael Butkin & Billy LaForest with a huge smallie that topped the scales at 5.24 lbs.
Do to the terrible weather conditions the drawing for the 2-free BFL entries was delayed until today. All names of the anglers were put into a hat and the winners of the BFL co-angler spots are Jason Madigan & Donny Dunfee. Congratulations to Jason and Donny and good luck in the upcoming BFL.
We'd like to thank everyone who helped make this event successful even under the most brutal conditions. All of the NBAA pro-staff and several anglers from the crowd really stepped up and did a fantastic job in helping us in getting through this tournament. Everyone who stepped up really went above and beyond in what could be called at best, extreme conditions. Again, THANK YOU to all of our pro-staff, anglers and sponsors for making the 2nd annual Detroit River Open the best it can be.
