It was brought to my attention that the law to remove the requirement to call Canadian Customs every time you boat into Canadian waters has passed the House of Commons and now goes to the minister for approval. It is expected that approval will happen and the new law is effective sometime next week. Unless there's some unexpected surprise you should no longer need to call CANPASS when boating into Canadian waters for the Ontario bass opener!

The agents on the Canadian boarder patrol hotline know me by name because I've call d in so much. They can even tell me who is fishing with me in my boat before I tell them.
I can't wait for the day when I don't have to call in. I'm can spend more time fishing instead of being on hold waiting for the next available agent.

Well, it should be sometime this coming week barring any unexpected surprises...

As far as what you need (besides a fishing license), it is always a good idea to have some type of acceptable proof of citizenship when you plan on fishing in Canadian waters - enhanced drivers license, certified copy of a birth certificate, passport. I don't carry my passport but I do have a Michigan enhanced drivers license and a certified copy of my birth certificate on me at all times.

There are a couple programs for people who do this often but the thing that reduces their effectiveness is always that they only work for your boat if everyone on the boat has the same approvals.

Ok, next question.  What is an enhanced driver's license ???  I'm not even sure if they have them in Indiana.

I read into this and it look a like you don't have to call to drive through Canadian waters but still have to call if your going to be stopping to fish. darn!

Only a few states have accepted enhanced drivers licenses so far. I don't believe Indiana is among them.

It costs more and has further verification information about who you are, where you're from, citizenship, DOB - not sure off the top of my head everything it has but the key is it has an installed chip that can be read so you have to keep it in a protective sleeve to to avoid having it read by a nearby skimmer.

That makes zero sense... I'll have to ask about this because the whole idea was to REMOVE the need to call in as long as you weren't landing?!? I have never seen fishing defined as landing in Canada?

I believe this is the new proposed law.  The wording  " Stopping " in Canadian waters could be a stumbling block.  The law seems more like when you are traveling and pass into Canadian water.

Michigan OutDoor News claimed that anglers don't need to call in in the latest issue. I'm taking it as fact and carrying that issue with me in the boat!

As you saw in my other post (under General Discussion), the Canada Border Services Agency has updated their web page to show you don't need to call as long as you don't anchor, moor or make contact with another conveyance while in Canadian waters, and
do not embark or disembark people or goods in Canada.
