I prefer to only report the good trips. I'd have it seem that I always get them but that isn't really true in fishing is it? Derek and I took our May 3rd weekly trip to dartag's Union Lake thinking we'd whack some smallies and largemouth bass both only to find out we weren't going to whack much of anything.

Here's the only fish I landed all day long... a walleye on a blade bait.

We stayed on the breaks only to find the fish we could catch were small pike that aren't even supposed to be that many in the lake. Well, we can find them! Derek found them better than I did! Luckily, the lake is pretty clear and we could see well enough that we avoided several pike laying along the breaks waiting to pounce on unsuspecting lures.

What we also found were a whole bunch of smallmouth bass that we could not interest in biting at all! We tried just about everything and they would just swim away or sometimes halfheartedly follow a lure. I think I had a nice one on a Stevie Rig (a drop shot Case Plastics worm) on one break but I never saw it hit because it was deep and dark so by the time I thought it might have my lure it let go, which I did feel... darnit!

We even went up a ways on several flats and later in the day saw more small to medium smallie cruisers up on there. They would usually run away though sometimes they again halfheartedly followed one lure or another.

In the end besides a small pike and a bite off all I caught was that walleye and Derek caught a few pike and got bit off too. We really threw the box at them and went up on the flats enough I thought we would have seen some beds if they were there but apparently we can't see either because I'm told there were bass on beds that we just didn't see.

So back to the fishing drawing board for this angler! Whew. Frustrating to see that many bass and not catch any of them...

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Gee I wish you would have called.   May 3rd was a Holiday on Union Lake.  The  fish are there but don't bite that day.   Hopefully you saw the Fish Parade and Beauty Pageant.  Miss Bass was a real looker this year.  The Walleye and Pike are jealous and mad so that is probably why it bit.  Good thing is Bedding is winding down and the Real Fishing will start soon.

Better luck next time.

Not sure if I'll give it another try or not... parade or no, you just don't treat a guy that way...

It gets tough now that the spawn is over.   Plus the speedboats are out in full force.

Dan - that's what happens when you don't consult Lola before arriving to her lake....
