This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Hey, to those guys farmiliar with Sanford Lake, I wouldn't mind any tips on a successful outing on this Saturdays opener. LOL! I just put in and shot around the lake a bit yesterday just to get an idea of where these little green monsters and bronze backs could possibly be. Water temp yesterday was 48 degrees, yet at creek openings increases by a degree or two more. Water was really milky with visibility not any more than 1ft. For those of you who know the lake well and could help point out some tips and lure selections that have worked out for you at this time of year, please divulge! I got a season pass for the Sanford Lake Store, will likely see you all down there this year. 4 full days and counting - give me some ideas to gear up for some opener fun!

With those water temps those fish are going to start staging. Find areas that you think they will make beds and work around them. If they aren't in those areas just back out and follow their staging points to those cuts, or spawning flats. Depends how the weather goes this week but I would start with jerkbaits and lipless cranks. If you find them slow down a little with jigs or any t-rig plastic. Use your confidence colors for muddy water

Are you taking about the store about half way up the lake?? Blue building?? What was the cost for the season pass and how does that ramp look??

Coop

Yeah it is the little blue store. They want $55 for the season. I got a sticker for my trailer after paying. Funny you ask about the ramp. It looked fine, I got in and out with ease. Although I watched a idiot with a front wheel drive Dodge Journey trying to yank out a skeeter 19ft'er. He had to call his buddy up to switch vehicles to get out. The ramp is very steep, they do need to clean off the stones from the concrete into the lift. Like driving on marbles. I got a V-8 4wd so I had no problem.

Now about the fishing, I thought about starting in those 8ft-5ft areas close to the deep river channel. Although I proposed this question because it is a very odd lake.. Very skinny river channel with a ton of 8-3 ft giant flats. I marked a few logs and such but pretty flat with very soft bottom.

Those areas you are taking about would possibly be good. If you find spots like that near a spawning area that would be a good start. It is a odd lake, packed with giant bass all over!!
