I was reading this in one of my older In-fisherman Mags. It is good to know, Do Not Use Round Up Weed and Grass Killer anywhere near any kind of water or wetland. - Duane

Where HaveThe Frogs Gone? (Article from In-fisherman Magazine)

Frog's and other amphibians have declined across North America, due to pesticides in watersheds, other forms of pollution, and wetland destruction. The latest hit to frog populations is research showing that Roundup, the most commonly used herbicide in the world, is deadly to tadpoles. When applied at concentrations only 1/3 of the maximum expected in areas of application, 71 % of tadpoles of 3 frog species were killed. Moreover, in a single day 86% of adult frogs were killed by the "recommended" dosage of Roundup Weed and Grass Killer.
Roundup isn't approved for use in water, but homeowners and communities frequently use it near lakeshore and near pond edges. This information should lead to regulations to ban it near sensitive areas.
                     - Steve Quinn (In-Fisherman Magazine Aug/Sept. 2006)

The problem is people don't understand what they are using to erradicate weeds. Round Up is not supposed to be used anywhere near waterways. As evidenced by the attached MSDS sheet(material data safety sheet) any application near a lake, stream or river is contrary to the the intent of Round Up's use. Frogs, Salamanders and other species have been subjected to the improper use of pesticides and herbicides due to the use of Round Up and other products. We really need to pay attention to the products we are using in our yards and gardens.

You ever have one of those days when nothing ever works?

DDBethke

Interesting...(Did I see it right they tested Roundup on a dog?  :-\')

One problem,  no one ever thinks about this... Most of us live around some kind of water, so please educate your neighbors and neighborhood this spring/summer.

If we only even talk about it to the people we know, we'll have made a difference.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Definitely,

I was glad to hear the Frogs near my house singing away today ;D

FYI,

I have found that there are no Fish friendly options for Lawn Weed Killers or Weed Control products sold at any "Lowe's or Home Depot's". All of their weed control products are not safe for use near water (Ponds, Lakes, Rivers, etc). I did find many forums and websites saying the use of regular white Vinegar works just as well.

http://www.lawnsite.com/archive/index.php/t-77625.html

I looked on the bag of other products like Scott's Turf-Builder and it says in small print - Toxic to Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates (things fish eat).

Thanks,
Duane
