Blade Baits

This spring I said i wanted to learn to fish blade baits and spoons. I bought a few of each.

This afternoon the fish were throwing a shut out for the first 4 hours as I was throwing everything without a nibble. Looked in the tackle box and put on a 1/2 oz Dimiki blade bait in silver and perch colors and proceeded to land two 3#, 2#, 4 1/4 # on 6 casts. I had a little lull and then hooked a bigen that i lost at the boat cause i was truing to maneuver between all the docks i was between and a very excited black lab in the boat.  It had to have gone 5+.

I called it a day as i was already running late for MSU- UM game. Technique was just vertical jigging and just a quick snap of the rod about 1 to 2 feet and feel the fish after the drop  as u go to snap again. Fished over 15' water @ 50 degrees. Great feeling to have success  on a new technique especially after getting your rear handed to u for hours.

One of my favorite cold water techniques.  Largies or smallies?  The smallies will KILL those things.  Find one hole full of them and park it. Have a hayday.

jiged a 1/2 blade yesterday on fenton with zero hits i think i need to use a stiffer rod next time

This is new to me. Do you just jig the blade bait? I thought I saw something on mich out doors on this. Also and good go to colors for a new guy. Or supplier?

Not an expert as it was the first time I used them. I was just dropping to bottom and then ripping up a foot or two and letting it drop back down. When i went to rip back up fish were on. I would think you could fish more horizontal with them and do the same process back to the boat

    I have cast blade baits out and fished them back to the boat.  When the water is real cold... 40 - 45  I will just lift enough to feel the blade vibrate just a little then let if drop on a tight line.  Still don't feel the fish hit.  Just feel them on the lift.
    I usually use Cicadas.  I think they vibrate a little easier.  I don't feel that color makes that much difference.

Like other lures, you can try variations in the amount and speed of lift until you get bites. I mostly just use silver/chrome-colored blade baits. One of my favorite fall to winter techniques for largemouth and smallmouth bass. I fish them vertically and horizontally though normally around 10 feet or deeper to 30+ at times. I have caught bass shallower in real cold water real late in the year vertically or close to vertical. I have tried chartreuse, gold, whites and other colors but use silver/chrome most of the time.

How do you like those Dimiki Vaults?  Besides some old discontinued gold Silver Buddies and Vibe E's, been throwing the smaller profile Binsky.

For me, the bite starts when the water is under 50 and dropping.  The most difficult part for me is to find the groups of wintering fish, not if the bait catches anything.

Location is always the hardest part! Anyone throw lures!

Though some people do throw them better than others some of the time.

I feel like a pretty good blade bait angler some of the time, and then I get in several peoples' boats and I don't feel that I'm very good at it anymore...

I try to look at it as I KNOW there's more fish there to be caught all of the time!

I hooked a couple 5# sm on the Dimiki in a half hour fishing docks a couple nights ago. Fished some spoons with no luck. Gaining a lot of confidence in the blade baits but i think fishing them in right conditions are key

Went out this morning for a couple hours on my lake and tossed a silver buddy.  First time I have ever had one on.  Caught 4 nice smallies and 1 perch.  2 of the smallies hit it on the fall and the other got it as I was bouncing it off the bottom.  Might try again later in the week when it is a little warmer.  Water was 45 degrees and crystal clear.
