This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

will be coming up in about 13 days.  Is there a limit on how many rock bass we can keep a day.  These things are huge.  I'm from Ky so we don't see them this size.  What is the best color for rattle traps.  What are the best brands to use up on lake St.Clair.

tjrock

Rockbass are grouped in with Crappie, Bluegill and Sunfish there is no size limit and the daily possession limit is 25 in any combination.

Lake St. Clair is probably one of the best rock bass fisheries in the world! I used to get my younger brothers on them when they were just old enough to go to 'the big water' and they wouldn't want to stop catching them! Even to go after smallies! The rockies were just too easy to catch a bunch of them. I don't mind either really. Especially now.

As far as trap baits, I like red in the spring. Even on St. Clair. I mostly use Spots in the past and have recently added Red Eye Shads to the arsenal for something different.

You should always have chartreuse handy in the spring for smallies too. I mostly throw red, chartreuse or chrome (chrome/blue back, chrome/black back) or shad colors. Once in a while, I throw a crayfish color - green or brown.

Fillet a Rock Bass and uh, uh, uh. Going and get them today.

I've never been a real big fish eater but we did eat lots of rock bass when I was young. I seem to remember they were as good as most other panfish. Where you catch them from and how you take care of them does help as with many fish species.

Hey, there's no season on them either, right?  Don't think I would eat one, assuming I ate fish to begin with.

Waterfoul

I like chrome and blue traps on St. Clair.

We call rockbass "punters" up at a buddies place.  It's a managed lake and they do NOT want them in there.  You should see how far they fly!
Addicted to fishing.  All the time, any species, anywhere!!  Especially in West Michigan!!!

Can't go wrong with chrome/blue or chrome/black on LSC.  Or any other water, for that matter.

Never specifically targeted rock bass but they'll readily take cranks and inline spinners.  They're not bad eating - I can't tell the difference when they're mixed in with the rest of the panfish.

Please... no rock bass abuse on this forum.

I got my limit the other day on LSC but not on a crankbait. The 2 in. tube by Extreme rules the Rock Bass.

djkimmel

That should be a deadly lure for rockies. They have no fear.
