Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

Just before the October Natural Resources Committee meeting on Thursday, October 9, Commissioner John Walters added an amendment to Fisheries Order 206 – “Bass - Closed bass CIR season from May 1 – Friday before the third Saturday in June for Burt, Mullet, Crooked, Pickerel, and Black Lakes and their connecting waters.”

Here are a few highlights from our favourite little stretch of water in the heart of Canadas Capital, Ottawa. A small summer paradise for the avid fisherman.
The Rideau River, 5 minutes from home, represents the finest urban fishing in North America. Everything from Perch to Musky can be found a few steps down the road.
But there is one species that will leave all the others in the dust.
Yes, big summer smallies is where its at. They are no monster 8lbers but there a some mean old grandmothers lurking behind bolders and under bridges, packs of hungry bronze backs hunting along weed edges and cruising through the deep channels. With the attitude of pitbulls and a sensational appetite for crayfish, even the smaller comrades will put your skill to the test.
