Move went fine. The new server is much faster. Which is good!

I'm planning on moving to a new server within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Just a little friendly warning as there might be a few hours of odd behavior when the process starts. I will try to have it done at night or weekend.

Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

If i am running my Humminbird 788/798 in just GPS view, is the unit still pinging the bottom even though sonar is not shown on screen?

Genie

Just because you are on a gps view screen doesn't mean the sonar is not pinging.  You have to make sure the sonar is disabled.  Not sure how to do that part on the bird.

Set the Sonar Menu to "Off"...This will turn off both the 2D sonar and the Side imaging....You can't run just the SI or Visa versa but you can run just the GPS functions...

I just did a little more checking on this...(I am a new HB owner myself). There is suppose to be a "shortcut" to shutting off the ping....It was part of an update...

Try hitting the Power/light button once and see if a screen comes up with a menu to "Shut ping/sonar off"....

You can still do it from the Menu but this would be a faster option if it works..

Alot of guys like to shut the Sonar off because sometimes it interferes with another unit on their boat...Some Anglers believe it can alarm fish in shallow water...

I actually think about that more than I should.  If its windy, the lake has alot of traffic, or if I'm fishing deep I dont worry about it.  If I am in a shallow calm area, its always in the back of my head.  That clicking is pretty loud.

bigmojet

Some believe that the fish can pick up the sound wave in their lateral line thus putting them off or on alert.

Mike S.

I have never even thought about that. But, they are very loud. I know when I look at maps on my units in the garage, you can really hear it. Good question. Will definitely remember that.
