sat there this morning figuring the wind will never die down.  Put on my rain suit and headed out on the lake.  Figured I would throw a spinnerbait until the Lions game started.  Went to the protected shore and start casting.  Caught a 2 pound smallie on the third cast.   Didn't have another hit until I got out to where it was really blowing.  Started catching some nice smallies and largemouth.  Turned on the livewell and start keeping them.  At one point I was going 2.3 mph on my gps without the trolling motor on. Fish were on the flats and would spit up minnows all the way to the boat.   Caught a nice limit and even culled 3 times.  Was having so much fun I stayed out and came in at 1/2 time of the Lions.  My 5 fish weighed 11.2 lbs.   Only used 1 rod with a Strike King Pro Model white spinnerbait.   Looks like the fall bite is on.

No photos cause Lola would not get off the couch.

I would drive past union lk. sooo many times on our way to fish other lakes (long, cedar isl., brendle) and finally about 3 years ago, i fished it on a wednesday and had a blast. I hate the parking situation, though, and i haven't been back since. My loss.....

I have been on Union Lake about a dozen times.  Some times when I have gone there the fishing has been great.  Some times when I have gone there the fishing was lousy.  Kind of like Belleville Lake can be.  But it is a good lake.  Back when there were trout in that lake, my wife's grandfather help a master angler award for trout.  I think it was a rainbow trout he caught there so many years ago.  I don't think there is any trout in there now and if there still is you don't hear of any being caught.  Have you ever caught trout in that lake dartag??  I know you have lived there for quite a while so I was just wondering.

They quit planting trout in 1990 due to low oxygen levels below 30 feet.  The trout did not survive the hot summers.   When they would plant them the blue herons used to sit on my dock and feast on them.  They did plant walleye for a while and they did real good.  Not sure why the quit.   There are still some in the lake but it appears they have not planted any here in a while.  The zebra mussles really cleaned the lake up and I think that is why the smallmouth population is so good.
