Mike S.

I caught a tagged smallie on St Clair last Saturday. What am I supposed to do with the tag?

Mike S.

Never mind. I messed that up. I didn't weigh or measure the fish. This was the second one I ever caught, and both were from Anchor Bay. The guy I fished with took the tag. I messed this one up.

It's fishermen like you...

Report the tag to michigan.gov/taggedfish online. You just need the information off the tag though they would like measurements of course to go along with it. You can estimate it. They will send you information back about the history of the tagged fish.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I didn't think you were supposed to un-tag it ? I thought you just weigh, it, measure it, and report the tag number and date / location caught ?
Thanks Dan for bringing year round Catch and Release to Michigan

It can be confusing but in the past on Lake St. Clair for smallies they wanted you to take the tag and send it in. I haven't confirmed that lately. Might be the case in general for jaw tags. Other tags are different but often they expect the fish with those tags to be kept unlike bass which they know many anglers will voluntarily release.

I got one a few years ago, and they told me i should have removed it, I just took down the numbers and the size and weight, and sent it in. They then sent me back the stats on my fish.

TCook

I got 4 tagged fish last week. Ended up taking the tags out thought they were worth a few bucks to report.
FISH HARD!!!

djkimmel

Some used to have a cash value to encourage reporting. Not sure that they still do that?
