how to fish the channels

I posted this question in another spot but would like some info on how to control your boat in the channels for bass.  Ive done it now twice including today and I just want to make sure that Im doing it right.  I have been told that you need to have you bait vertical and to do this, if there is wind to put the bow of the boat into the wind.  Try to dial in the right speed and use the constant switch on the trolling motor.  But what if there is no wind then what just drift with the current or do I put the bow of the boat into the current.  Today there was no wind and It seemed to work to just drift with the current.  If I have been told correct then now I just need to practice if not could someone please tell me how to do it. Also I have found a spot that holds bass couldn't I just use my trolling motor to keep me on that spot so Im not drifting past it and really work it.

Since bass fishing is this huge puzzle, all of the techniques you're describing are right. When you're out there, try them all. That's the key to getting the pieces of the puzzle put together. Let the fish tell you what they like. You'll eventually figure out the pattern or patterns.

There are lots of information on vertical jigging for walleye on the internet - it is the same concept and technique. Maybe you could use that to get some tips.

thanks I was really just trying to figure out how to keep my bait vertical buy using the trolling motor.  I think I figure out how to get the bass bite once I learn how to keep it vertical.  So what I have been told is correct.

I fish the river a lot.  Personally I always keep the bow facing up stream.  Most trolling motors can be turned to push your boat backwards if you really need to, but when I do this, I still keep my bow upstream.  Usually the current is pushing you downstream regardless of the wind.  Once in a while the wind almost wants to keep you still.  This is sometimes a good thing because if you're on a small spot, you can stay there.  Yes, sometimes you want to hold on a small spot.  This is very often the case.  There are a bunch of small spots where I do this and cast and let the bait get down quick and come back to me.  Then I repeat the process.  But even if I'm drifting a long section, I try to keep my bow upstream so that I have maximum control.  This just works for me.  I'm no expert, but it's the way I do it.  But like BD said, any of those techniques can work.  It depends on how you are with your trolling motor and honestly it depends a little on your boat too. 

Rule of thumb.  If you're drifting, keep the bait vertical.  If you're holding on a spot, cast forward, get the bait down quickly and work it back to you and repeat.

I have a 20ft skeeter with a 70lb thrust pro series motor guide if that helps.  Next week when I go I will give that a try as well however Im not sure if my trolling motor has enough power to keep me on a spot. but it may slow me down enough to fish it.

You should be fine.  I have a 19.7 with an 82# and can move upstream against the current most of the time no problem.  I fished with a backup 70# for a while two years ago in the river and did fine.  If you're in eddies, it's easy anyway.
