Brim Beds and Fall Spawning Smallmouths

While I was reading about the practice days for the FLW Cup contenders getting ready for the start of tomorrow's Forest Wood Cup (Weigh-in is online at 4:00 pm) they mentioned that some guys will be fishing shallow because the brim were bedding. Do brim, southernese for bluegill bed twice in the south, or is this a false spawn?
I have been up on Duck Lake at Interlochen in early fall and have seen with my own two eyes not only smallmouth bedding, but smallmouth doing their spawning dance. I would say that this was a false spawn caused by the moon being full and the water temp dropping to where it triggers spawning behavior. Has any one else ever experienced this or Lt. Dan have you a biological explanation? Plus Mr. Kimmel can you IM me about talking to an acquaintance of mine who would like some info on Burt and Mullet. He has a September tournament up there and has never been there. I have only been there during the spawn. Thanks.

I've heard there are multiple spawns in the Southern states though they are generally later in the year than this from all I've heard. Haven't studied 'brim' spawning practices. I have seen smallmouth bass trying to bed in the fall way up North. Once watched two smallies on Douglas Lake go at it in September on a nice cleaned up spot in the reeds. It was fairly fascinating to watch.

Some biologists say they get confused and try to spawn, though probably with no actual production of anything. Others say what we are seeing is something else. I have never seen a study on it though I bet there is one out there somewhere if someone looked hard enough.

As far as the Lake Drive classic in September, to be fair to the friends who have already asked for my help, I'm pretty much maxed out on the help I can give on those lakes. I'd suggest they buy the Hot Spots map and the Lakemaster map and fish near likely spawning areas. Some of the bass won't be far away at all. The key, gimme spots I know about are already taken.
