I'm disappointed to see now that House Natural Resources and Tourism Committee Chair Representative David Martin has added those very bad commercial fishing bills HB 5801 and 5802 to an upcoming committee hearing on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at noon.

The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Brookville Reservoir Help

Hey guys,
I am fishing the Big Ten tournament on Sunday(the 26th) on Brookville Reservoir in Indiana.  The lake is over 5,000 acres with a ton of shoreline with both largemouths and smallies.  I am going down on thursday so I will have a couple of days of prefishing.  I'm not asking for any "secret spots", I have just never fished down there before so I was wondering if anybody has any helpful hints to point me in the right direction or any ideas on what I should look for?  I am assuming and hoping that most of the fish will be in prespawn, but there may be some earlier spawners on beds already.
Thanks for the help.

Never been there.. Id look for the warmest water available. Not sure about Brookville but i think its a pretty clear place. Check the upper end of the lake. Look for pockets of dirtier water or something like that is warmer and shallower. the fish that have spawning on there mind will be there. if not hit the main river points looking for the fish moving into the creek arms.
NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Thanks for the tips, Skeeterman.  I will definetly be on the lookout for those types of areas.

I wish I could help. I have fished most of the Indiana water, but Brookeville is one that I have not. I have fished with several guys who have fished this lake, though. I will see if I can get ahold of a couple of them and see what they say. I know Brookeville is a veryyyyyyyyyyy tough lake. The last state finals I fished I drew two guys that both came from the Brookeville top 8. I think it only took 7 pounds to wind for two days. My first day partner had 1 fish for 3 1/2 pounds and finished like 13th and the second day partner I had had one keeper each day for just shy of 4 pounds and finished 10th. That was about 7 years ago and maybe the fishing has improved. I will let you know if I can get you any information.
