Yesterday at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing, science prevailed thanks to many, many persons who took the time to write in, and especially those who showed up to speak before the Commission on Commissioner Walters’ amendment to close bass fishing on the Inland Waterway and Black Lake from May 1 until the third Saturday in June.

Cheetem, McCarter and myself made a venture out on this past sunday on a wonderful spring day here in michigan to fish for some Walleye's in the Detroit river near Wyandotte.
Both these guys are rookie walleye fisherman and they couldn't have picked a better day to try it out. The temp was in the upper 30's wind blowing from the Notheast at about 17mph and it was snowing and raining. Great conditions.

We started fishing at around 8:00am just east of Mud Island and on the first drift we managed to get 2 very nice eater sized males on a chartruse 3/4 oz jig with a zoom fluke in silver rainbow. After 2 more drifts in this area it was just to cold to stay right in the teeth of the wind so we moved to a little more protected area behind Mud Island with the flotilla of boats that had the same idea and managed 1 more fish. After a few more drifts in this area we decided to make one last drift were we started and managed 1 more keeper before it was off to a hungry mans breakfast at the corner restaurant.

I was so cold I decided I didnt want to clean the fish so we gave them to a couple of guys that were leaving the ramp at the same time we did.

The boys were having a hard time on the hook set as walleye jiging is a little bit different than pulling a largemouth out of heavy cover with a flipping stick and braid and both lost fish with the hook set, but I think next time they will have it.

The day was miserable weather wise, but it couldn't have been any better spending the morning with good buddies, friendly banter, and a delicious breakfast to top it off. Guy my boat is open anytime you two want to try it again.

Thanks for the day

Wouldn't necessarily call myself a rookie...spent many years fishing marble eyes on Erie with my grandpa back in the..uh, well the original Star Wars movie was pretty popular back then...so was the TV show Facts of Life...man I loved that Blair chick...Anyways, I   used to do some jigging back in the day on the lower detroit river, but it's been a "few" years.  I will admit I have to get the "feel" for this type of fishing back.  Having the right rod will definitely make a big difference next time out.  I think I went a little too heavy and a little too fast this time out.  Thanks by the way, it was fun watching you catch fish and hearing McCarter cry...can't wait for the next time...

Hey Jeff,

Maybe the problem was with your guide.  Next time give me a call.  Kevin may beat me once in a while when it comes to bass, but he can't keep up with me when it comes to ole' marble eye.... ;D

Just kiddin' Kev.....

My first time walleye fishing.  I would rank it somewhere in between getting kicked in the crotch with a golf cleat and pulling my leg hairs out one by one.  the good news is, even tho the water was rough, there was no fear of falling into it because if anyone happened to lose there balance, they would have just fallen into someone elses boat.  The pack em tight on the river this time of year i guess.  To top it off, the walleyes were 'in the mood' so after kev had caught 4, the whole front deck of the boat looked like an adult film gone wrong.............or right..............i dont know.  But it was pretty nasty none the less.  I think i will stick to bass fishing until i master it then maybe take on walleye fishing.

McCarter himself :-\'
