This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

We need members to contact their Legislators to support House Bill 5255 that prohibits fish pen fish farming on our Great Lakes. The bill has been heard twice now in the House Natural Resources Committee and may be acted on this coming week or soon.

Members of the House Natural Resources Committee include:
Andrea LaFontaine (R) Committee Chair, 32nd District
Bruce Rendon (R) Majority Vice-Chair, 103rd District
Anthony Forlini (R) 24th District
Ken Goike (R) 33rd District
Lisa Posthumus Lyons (R) 86th District
Ed McBroom (R) 108th District
John Kivela (D) Minority Vice-Chair, 109th District
Charles Smiley (D) 50th District
Julie Plawecki (D) 11th District

In addition we spoke opposing House Bills 5166, 5167 and 5168 that would allow fish farming in inland and Great Lakes public waters, create a simple agency without appropriations to regulate aquaculture fish farming without very good oversight or monitoring. These 3 bills are before the House Agriculture Committee that needs to hear you do NOT want these 3 bills passed out of committee or passed at all. Members of the House Agriculture Committee include:
Dan Lauwers (R) Committee Chair, 81st District
Triston Cole (R) Majority Vice-Chair, 105th District
Ray A. Franz (R) 101st District
Ben Glardon (R) 85th District
Joel Johnson (R) 97th District
Rick Outman (R) 70th District
Bruce Rendon (R) 103rd District
Holly Hughes (R) 91st District
Brett Roberts (R) 65th District
Jason Sheppard (R) 56th District
Henry Vaupel (R) 47th District
Charles Brunner (D) Minority Vice-Chair, 96th District
George Darany (D) 15th District
Alberta Talabi (D) 2nd District
Gretchen Driskell (D) 52nd District
Bill LaVoy (D) 17th District
LaTanya Garrett (D) 7th District

You can also contact your local State Senator or Rep asking them to oppose fish pen aquaculture in the Great Lakes and our public waters, to support House Bill 5255 and oppose House Bills 5166, 5167 and 5168. While you are at it ask them to support Senate Bill 326 that regulates and limits aquaculture on our inland waters too.

Find  your Representative or Senator at: http://www.legislature.mi.gov/mileg.aspx?page=legislators

Don't wait. Make a quick phone call or email now to these Legislators to fix this issue before it has a chance to cost our public trust waters so a few people can make more money off our public waters.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
