I'm disappointed to see now that House Natural Resources and Tourism Committee Chair Representative David Martin has added those very bad commercial fishing bills HB 5801 and 5802 to an upcoming committee hearing on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at noon.

The poorly written, damaging to Michigan Sport Fishing commercial fishing bills have been introduced again. State House Bills 5801 and 5802, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin and Rep. Jason Morgan, have been assigned to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism.

This is a tale of two lakes. Intertwined lakes, in Barry County, Michigan. Where somehow the water has gone away. Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, both near and dear to me, are suffering from the lowest water levels I've seen in the 35+ years I've been fishing them.

Another thing to occupy your time. If you are dealing with cabin fever and have alot of time on your hands you probably have been doing alot of reading like myself. I came across this thread on BBC and I thought it would be worth sharing here. The information that Don Applegarth reveals many of us already know but his approach and tips could be very valueble down the road. This is worth taking some time to read, Don was a brilliant angler.

Thanks T for the info.  I just set that show be recorded tonight in case I forget it's on and I noticed a couple other cool shows on after it.  At 11:00 is Hooked: Man vs Fish and at 12:00 was Fishzilla: Snakehead Invasion.  Both may be interesting.

Thanks for the heads up T, cool show . I had seen pics of dottie before, but seeing her on that show gives a different perspective on her . Also enjoyed watching the bass feeding under water and how they move thru the weeds , very cool.

Durand Dan

I thought the show was a little fragmented. Dottie was an awesome fish. I really didn't see the need for it to die though. Unless he was going to eat it ;D

I forgot that my cable company cut national geographic from our viewing area awhile ago, so I missed it. How big was this Dottie?

Dottie was 25+ pounds.  She had been caught twice before.  The last "legal" time she was caught she was 22+ pounds, but by the time the game warden came to officially verify her weight, she had lost fluids and eggs and was 21+ pounds.

She was thirty inches, but looked like a little pig ! I would've loved to see footage of her swimming around . I thought that was weird too Dan , them wanting her to die before someone else caught her . I felt for the guy on Sam Rayburn who thought he had a 8lber until he put it on the scale and it was only 6.53 . I hate livewell shrinkage :'(

dashaver63

"Dottie" died of natural causes. The game warden found her floating in the back of one of the arms of Lake Dixon. She was believed to have spawned out. That was a very old fish.

Yeah, thanks for clueing us in on the show.  It was pretty neat, nothing too ground breaking, but entertaining all the same.  I like how they interviewed some of the other pros too like Ken Cook.  I agree it was kind of sad when Dotty died and they didn't show her much respect for as much as she was worth to those guys.

I was surprised that Ken Cook was referred to as an Oklahoma Fisheries Biologist, and not a BASS pro.

Did you see that 5lb. bass eat that one that had to go at least
a pound and a half? I thought it was a good show, something different on bass fishing.

That confused me too and I thought well maybe that's a different Ken Cook? He looked different? He did start off as a fish biologist in Oklahoma though.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
